Coping with the weather in Canada
I staying in Malaysia for about 29 years. Planning to move over to Toronto, Canada with my family (my husband and one daughter). Any advice do feel free to inform. I know about their weather in Toronto, that worries me alot. My daughter will be about two and half years old by the time we moved to Canada. She is weak and always got flu and cough. I just afraid she might not cope with the weather there. But in another thought, I am thinking she might be able too. What do you said? Have any parents came across this situation with their kids? Do share them with me. I just read about the frostbite and it frighten me.
"The elderly, young children, people with circulator disorders, and people from tropical climates have a higher risk factor of getting frostbite." It will be a great help and ideas. Thanks in advance. |

Re: Coping with the weather in Canada
You will only get frostbite if you stand out in minus 20 naked. Stop worrying. The weather in Canada isnt going to change. People just deal with it as Im sure you do with the heat in your country.

Re: Coping with the weather in Canada
I grew up in a hot, humid climate. Now, after thirty years in Calgary, I have a harder time coping with heat and humidity (for example, when I visit Toronto in summer :) ) than I have coping with Calgary's cold winters.
As other posters have said, you just need appropriate outdoor clothing. The Scandinavians have a saying that I have found to be true in winter, "There's no bad weather, only inappropriate clothing." At least you can dress for the cold. Once you've stripped naked in the heat and humidity, you can't undress any further. :p Another thing to be aware of is that Canadian houses are well heated and insulated. I'm far more comfortable in my Calgary home in -30 deg C weather than I've been in our previous South African and Australian houses in those countries' much milder winters. That's because our houses in those countries were poorly heated and insulated. |
Re: Coping with the weather in Canada
Once you get used to it, you will appreciate the beauty of winter. I grew up in tropical climate, but now I prefer winter. Btw, I hardly ever get colds during winter, only in summer.

"Beauty of Winter", my arse.
Older Canadians cope with the weather by wintering in Florida, Arizona or Texas. |

You're right, but the OP was not a senior citizen, but a young family. Plenty of time for retirement plans later.;)

I do like the snow for the first month or so each year, then the impracticality of it gets to me.

I know what I am going to ask is a stupid question. But I think it will prepare me before I am going to settle there.
