Woohoo! I just got accepted for Class 2 Contributions which I really did not expect to happen, especially since I was accepted for Class 3 2 years ago. (didn't pay anything yet). Presumably because I've been self-employed since coming to Canada. Also did not expect a response so quickly, probably less than 2 months.

That’s fantastic news! When did you submit your application? I logged in to my account and it said I should wait 5-weeks for a response. I didn't hear back after 5-weeks, so called HMRC yesterday; they told me that the new timeline is now 10-weeks!! They must be really short-staffed over there!

Actually, it does look like it took about 8-10 weeks. The date on the letter is May 9.

Thanks. That's good to know. I'm glad there's still plenty of time until the contribution deadline.

Ah, maybe because you don't have a government gateway log in? I do, so it doesn't ask me for anything else, two clicks and I can see what my pension forecast is and my NI record. But perhaps those that don't have one (or that have a foreign address) need to give more info.

I never had an issue logging in. The system still has my old UK address from almost 20 years ago!
As for making payment, if I’m eligible for Class 2, I’m going to research paying electronically via an online service website called Transferwise. Their exchange rates are much more advantageous than the big banks.

Your passport has nothing to do with HMRC. One would wish that the govt. departments were integrated like that but they are not.

When I registered it wanted to verify my ID by me inputting the date of issue and my passport number. Once I had done so, I was good to go.

Like Almost Canadian said, when you sign up for an NI on-line account they verify your identity by asking for several pieces of information from your passport, not just your usual personal information - name, dob, place of birth, but also things specific to the passport such as the issue date.
