I don't work in construction but have many clients who are general contractors or sub trades. In 2005-2007 all you needed to get work in construction was a hammer and a pulse. Things have changed. There is still work available but it is for people who do a good job for a reasonable price. Some of my clients are saying that they are starting to get people sending resumes to them looking for work - unheard of in the last few years.

I think it might be a good idea to call your new employer and have a long chat. Firstly about how much work they have on their books and secondly about whether, and how soon, they will sponsor you for the Provincial Nominee Program so you can get permanent residence.

It is not all doom and gloom. As I said, there is still work about for the good companies. But, I would be cautious if you are not comfortable with what you hear from the employer.

I was just reading in the paper over the weekend that 25,000 jobs are expected to be lost in BC in the construction sector for 2009. About 10 projects have gone under in the past 6 months.
