think we are all in the same boat..i was working in vancouver for 15 months as a brickie, when i first arrived they were craying out for brickies and could have walked into any job. with in the 15 months of working there i seen the industry slow down, brickies getting laid off and then re hired at lower rate.

i arrived in toronto last week, and have been looking for jobs..every time i ring up all i get is we have your number and will call when there is a job

You need to read the articles on job hunting in the wiki. e.g. http://britishexpats.com/wiki/Canada_is_different!!!

It is highly unlikely that you will get any response to email applications in the construction industry at any time, especially at the moment. You need to make personal contact.

Right now the construction industry in Western Canada is in the doldrums. There are more workers about than are needed. There is quite a bit of optimism that things will pick up next year (in the Vancouver area at least) but very few companies are hiring at this time.

depends who you speak to, homestarts (timberframe) do seem to be picking up but nowhere near the pace of last year. As for construction in general there is still work going on but from what i see contractors are using the staff they have and not going for new hires.

but being positive, things MAY be on the turn. We've had more inquiries for proposals and a hole in ground opposite my office that has been stalled for 6 months has started up again. Fingers crossed it keeps improving!
