CONSERVATORIES IN CANADA?
 

I too have been playing pretend house buying and have looked at loads of homes on MLS.ca, has the conservatory thing by-passed Canada, I see loads of houses that would look great with one on the back?

Would love to know if they are available or is this an opportunity for some entrepreneur/builder.

My Dad had one added onto his house but it isn't seen very often. Not too expensive that I recall, but he did the work himself so not sure of the companies that are out there.

We have a sunroom out back, similar to a conservatory in purpose. too hot in the summer, too cold in the winter. We basically use it as a boot room and somewhere to store the firewood so it can dry out a bit more...

In the UK I guess its a convenient way to add interior space. If your house already has 2500 sq ft like many here, a conservatory is just extra area to have to clean isnt it?

I thought this thread was going to be about music schools...

Does any house look better with one of these monstrosities attached? I admit than many houses in Canada could not look worse, but even so. As Iain notes as far as I can tell they are too hot in summer and too cold in winter. I have always assumed that in the UK they are only bought by senile old people who couldn't say no to the dodgy bloke at the door.

Never saw them in suburbia, but once we moved out to the country they seem much more popular here

I suppose they're popular when its worth looking out the window :huh:

I think the issue is the weather in Canada. Also conservatories are an insurance risk - easier to break into aren't they?

They're Sun Rooms in Canada and one big issue is snow load. Wet snow is 50lbs a cubic foot, add some ice on that 1" thick another 4.7lbs a square foot.

Then many Canadians spend time outdoors not sitting in a sun room.

One of my eventual plans for our gaff, is to put a sun-room (conservatory) on the back. We don't have the extreme cold/heat here and I believe a well constructed one would be a useful addition. My folks have a large one on their place back in the UK and pretty much live in it. So, done well, they are a nice to have in my book. Of course there are many that are done badly and are little more than glorified leantoo sheds.;)

Sitting in a vehicle with a sunroof or sitting in a sun room, it's all the same ;)

we hope to go to victoria, yes I know they can get huge dumps of snow though i understand that the weather is much like Uk. so it could be a ok.

Are there planning issues with erecting them? i would add that a sun room with a proper roof ;) would be my choice.

Most people just use the scrapped cars in their back garden for one.

Almost every house has a deck. Why not go the whole hog and be outside rather than being neither in or out. In Victoria in the summer you will want outside space.

Some people enclose their decks to create a sun room, but it is not that common.
