Yep, there's lots of fun games you can play on highways in a whiteout, like:
"Find the highway exit", "Follow the leader", "Stop and scrape"..to name a few... My personal favourite is "Create a new lane". Bit dangerous, but very rewarding. |

Then there's road roulette - leave the snow on the roof, drive down the road, get up to speed, brake and guess where you are going!
Then, the snow comes flying off in big icy chunks. Looks very pretty in the rear view mirror. |

It's really good when its snowed, then the temperature goes up a bit, and it turns to rain for a while, then it freezes. Then you drive onto the highway and get up to speed.

And you all look forward to that kind of driving like that when you're old with slower reactions?

I'm already old with slow reactions. I saw the ice chunk flying off the minivan long before it sailed through my windscreen, I just didn't know what to do about it.

My favorite winter road sport is slamming the anchors on before a stop sign so I just skid slightly over the line. The look on the faces of the approaching drivers is hilarious!

Well we have been here over 3 months already and although we really like the place and have made some great friends we have encountered some major issues already that it is making us question our decision about moving here.
First of all jobs - although I have a job (came on a TWP) and I love my job my husband has really struggled to find decent work. It's not like there are no jobs but it seems to be more "who you know" here rather than can u do the job. Anyway he finally got a job although it is very heavy lifting and pretty sh*t work so he is still looking out for something else :(. Also having a major problem with finding doctors and the health care. There is a huge waiting list for doctors here and although there are walk in clinics for after hours they are unpredictable (one was shut last night at 8 and the other was full, despite there being 1 person in waiting room). We tried taking our 2 yr old to one last night as we really wanted a second opinion from a doctor and ended up going to the emergency room at the hospital, where we waited and waited and finally gave up as not one person had moved (one guy had been there 4 hrs already)!!! So I was just wondering if these are common problems that people have encountered all across Canada or is it just here (Fredericton NB) ? |

We are looking to move to Canada soon, and are concerned that you are saying there aren't a lot of doctors willing to take on new patients. We have a daughter that is diabetic and needs insulin injections and it is the thing that is worrying us the most about leaving the UK.
 Has anyone found it difficult to transfer medical records to Canada so that they can get prescription medication over there? |

I certainly don't which is why I'm very carefully thinking about just how long to stay for. I reckon being elderly here must be terrible and I really can't imagine dealing with the wintery conditions when I'm in my twilight years and breaking bones or having a heart attack while clearing more snow. Oh and the layers. Never, ever being able to just step out the house for a minute without applying layers of clothing and snow boots. Never mind being old I hate that now.
I find winters here long and oppressive and is out of everything would be my number one reason for moving back. It's great right now for the kids to enjoy the garden and run of all that excess energy but because of their young age they become prisoners of the indoors once the winter sets in and it goes on for so long here. I have no interest in winter sports and yes, I know that makes me a miserable git but neither does my Canadian wife. From my personal perspective the winter here, at least in my neck of the woods is the biggest downside of Canada and my mindset is already dreading the onset of next winter. Please comment who ever has found that happy medium. I know I need to be not too far from my children, but is Florida the only option for us! Any miracle cures much appreciated |
