I realise we are not eligible to apply for citizenship until next year,but this is an excerpt from the cic website.

Time lived in Canada

To become Canadian citizens, adults must have lived in Canada for at least three years (1,095 days) in the past four years before applying. Children do not need to meet this requirement.

Does this mean our 15 year old could apply for citizenship now, or does he have to wait until we are eligible too? :confused:

Good question.. I think that they're on about the kids you have after you become PR yourself though. As in, even though if you're only a PR, it doesn't mean that if your child is born in Montreal, that you have to wait til s/he is 3, or until you're a citizen yourself, before they can be granted citizenship.

The naturalization requirements for children under 18 are different from those for adults.

* the child should be a permanent resident
* a parent of the child should be a Canadian citizen or in the process of applying for Canadian citizenship

I think it is the other way around. A child born in Canada is a Citizen by birth so the naturalization process does not apply.

I don't believe your son can apply in his own right, I believe what they are saying is that if you reach 1095 days and qualify before your dependant children (who are with you and have PR status) then you can include them in your application, they won't grant you citizenship but exclude your children otherwise they would end up with citizens with PR children who could be deported on their own say if their PR expired etc. I would imagine dependant children means under 18 and in your custody with PR status.

Once example may be that you have a child but are separated from their other parent who say still lives in the UK and they go and stay with them for a few months every year and so don't meet the 3 years in Canada as soon as you.
