Default Come to Newfoundland!!

The good 'ol Newfoundland Government has a new website for the provincial PNP programme. Apparently there is a drive on to bring in skilled workers to replace all those leaving for Fort Macmurray!( )

Anyway, details on: http://www.hrle.gov.nl.ca/hrle/immig...lish/index.htm

To quote the press release:

"We want people who are eligible to come to Canada to choose Newfoundland and Labrador," said Minister Shelley. "We are a welcoming society with a rich culture that offers a good quality of life and a safe environment in which to raise a family. We particularly welcome those who would like to immigrate here to start a business, who understand the global marketplace, and who have the skills to work in areas where we have a labour shortage. Our Web site, www.gov.nl.ca/hrle/immigration, is one way to get these messages out to an international audience."

"Promoting Newfoundland and Labrador as an attractive place to invest and to work will be a key component of our provincial immigration strategy," added the minister. "We listened during consultations and have designed an online presence in both official languages. This spirit of cooperation will continue as we support the efforts of our educational institutions as they recruit international students to study in our province."

The site will evolve as work on the province’s immigration strategy continues. Currently, information about Newfoundland and Labrador’s history, culture and political structure is provided, as well as an introduction to business opportunities, travel and real estate. The site’s development was overseen by the Coordinating Committee for Newcomer Integration, while the people involved in settling and integrating immigrants into our communities provided direct input, such as the Association for New Canadians.

"This project is the result of collaboration with a broad array of stakeholders," said Bridget Foster, executive director of the Association for New Canadians. "It has achieved its goal of creating an accessible and comprehensive Web site, which will profile our province as a viable resettlement destination."

Its a great place, I've been here 14 mths and love it. Property is cheap, the air is clean, the rum dark and they have a town called 'Dildo' what more could you want!

The job market full stop is small but there are opportunities.....

For example, Aliant, the local telco has a big office here. They have a subsiduary called Xwave who do IT consulting. There are also a number of marine technology companies here, plus the govt, Memorial University, NL Hydro etc etc.

www.careerbeacon.com is a good job website for Atlantic Canada in general.

Does anyone know what Labrador City is like?
On a yahoo travel site it starts with

A further 260km west it's a shock to come across LABRADOR CITY and neighbouring Wabush, two planned mining communities of wide streets and a couple of malls in the middle of nowhere; both were established in the 1950s and, with 10,500 people, make up the largest concentration of people in Labrador. Labrador City, as a terminus of the rail line from Sept-Îles, is a convenient gateway into Labrador's hinterland, but little else will bring you here.

More info on: http://www.labradorwest.com/com_profile/main.htm . Lab city & Wabush which are two linked commuities are basically mining towns. I imagine life there is challenging but perhaps rewarding if you like open space and long winters!

Well, there are a number of native reserves in Labrador, created when the federal government forcibly resettled natives on to isolated, bleak tracts of land with no industry and no thought to their future. Alcoholism, depression and suicide are widespread. So in a way you could compare them to concentration camps, I suppose. I probably wouldn't go there and do it in person, though.

I`ve read the Newfoundland etc. PNP scheme site today.

It still suffers from NOT facing up to the reality that "every one`s gone to the moon!"

It still wants a steep price paid to "buy ya way in".

That government is - desperate to hang on to the "English Channel Islands" elitist attitude and at the same time encourage near semi - millionaires to settle.

It must drop below even PEI`s elitist attitude to a level similar to NB and NS.

Otherwise all that will happen is the "English holiday homes in Wales syndrome".

The island will have over priced homes in the future and all have gone to Alberta.

The only reason that stops a mass migration west now - is that people have got to pay a ferry company to be able to drive off and westward to the promised land of Alberta.

I am sure that Newfoundland and Labrador and it`s people are some of friendliest in Canada - but the NF & L gov. is out of touch with whats going down on the mainland!

Pah! A mere trifle.....I've already been up this morning to dig out the boiler flue from the 3 foot snowdrift so that I could put the heating back on! When we get snow we seem to get it in 40cm dumps. Admittably today its mostly going sideways.....I think its a stay at home day, shame its the weekend and not during the week!
