It is in the far north of alberta. There is a community of about 5000 but most are canadian military as it is a very large airbase. If you like fishing , hunting and drinking then you will be sorted. It is very very very very cold in winter and very bleak. Most people who serve there love it but if you are not military and used to that way of life think long and hard.

Dinger,

I will be there for a week in September on business, if you would like me to look into anything for you then let me know.

All I know about it is that is V cold, V remote and about a 7 hour drive from Calgary.

Winston and Lamin

Thank you both very much. It came up on a job search and I didnt want to put anything in until I had this kind of info. I guess that if its so remote and so cold it might not be to good for my wife. I personally dont have any problems.
I assume (although we should never assume anything really) that there is not much industry?

Here are the weather averages...pretty cold in the winter, but you are unlikely to need AC

My daughter was there for 2 weeks this summer with the Air Cadets doing survival training. It's a good 5 hour drive from Red Deer, she said it's really beautiful, with loads of wildlife around - the thing that worried her most was the fact that before they went out on Duo's (surviving for two days on one ration pack in pairs) they set of the bear scare guns, she also was not allowed to use mozzie repellent/deodrant/sunscreen as it attracts the bears. For 2 weeks she went to sleep and woke to the sound of F1 fighter jets - she knows the technical terms:eek:

I'm afraid that's all I can help you with but it's certainly an Air Force zone, my kids Air Cadet Sqaudron is affiliated with Cold Lake Air Base so they get lots of guest speakers down, I suppose there must be some auxillary services that are associated with military bases.

How do you like Red Deer?

A friend of mine moved to Red Deer last year, I worked with her husband I think he has moved there now, they might have moved further north or are going to very shortly cant quite remember the name of the place due to work.
I remember she had problems with the internet for some reason at Red Deer, obviously you dont have that problem

Re: Cold Lake Alberta - Where?

WE LOVE RED DEER! No seriously life has been good to us since moving here. It's a city of aroun 80,000 people, it has all the amenities of a larger city, eg Edmonton/Calgary without the traffic and the hustle and bustle. Loads of green spaces, you can get from one end of town to the other in 30 mins - used to be 20 but with the boom the city grew loads, now the economy has slowed the rate of growth has also slowed. There are good transport links within Red Deer, good schools etc. Edmonton and Calgary are only 90 mins away or so and the rockies are 2-3 hours away. Not had any internet problems other than those of our own cause or when there has been a proper fault as it were. I'll be happy to answer more detailed questions if you have them.
