Hi all
Need Info for friends on what kinds of food is available for Coeliacs(wheat & gluten allergies)....:)

Where, in restaurants, in the supermarkets, what kind of foods? I've found most supermarkets here have a reasonable range of wheat-free breads etc. in the freezer section as opposed to fresh.

You can find a fair bit of information through the Canadian Celiac Association. What is more useful than looking at the main page is the link to local chapters. If I follow the link to the Calgary Chapter, for example, I find a list of stores and restaurants in Calgary and surrounding towns that offer gluten-free products.

I have a friend here in Calgary who needs gluten-free diet, and she finds Aramanth very good. I don't know if they are Canada-wide.

She swears by the gluten-free flour here..... says it's wonderful and nothing she bakes fails to work! (Don't think it'd work for me though......:p ....I think it's just my cooking!) :D

I know she finds it awkward eating out.... but that's a world-wide coeliac's problem! :rolleyes:

Amaranth Whole Foods Market is a locally owned independent store. But they are a member of something called the Health First Network, an association of independent health food stores.

My eldest sons wife worked there a few years ago, I miss her discount.;) :)

I'm not coeliac but i am gluten intolerant. There are plenty of breads and pastas to buy in the supermarkets, fewer cakes and cookies. You need to go to specialist shops for those but there are plenty of them. Spelt flour is widely available around here if you can tolerate that.

Eating out, the staff are helpful and will find out whats what for you but more things seem to be coated in processed gunk, ie the fries and homefires so you cant just assume you have to ask specific questions.
