As far as I know if you have an international drivers license it is good for 12 months then it looks like you would have to take a test.
Here is a link to the Alberta Driver's Handbook All you never wanted to know about driving in Alberta .
Maybe it'll help.

If not hopefully some recent arrival will be able to help.

Cheers
Steve

That's what I recently told someone too, Steve, but a very recent arrival (maybe Posidrive?) corrected me. He was able to exchange his UK driver's licence for an Alberta driver's licence -- after parting with some money of course.

It's just since May this year, you can now exchange your UK licence for an Alberta one, so long as you passed after a certain date ... I think 1972. My hubby will have to take the test as he passed his earlier than this.

There is otherwise no need and no merit in obtaining an international licence.

New Albertans...Just exchange your UK license for an Alberta one...No test needed, however you will only get a basic car , irrespective of what categories you previously held in the UK....Yup the crossroads had us, when we arrived..was it give way to the left/right or was it a free for all...but rightly said just plain old manners, who arrives first goes.

Anyway hope you enjoyed your brief visit to Cochrane...It's a wonderful place to live, and just an hour away from the most beutiful scenery in the world.

GGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRREEEEEE EEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT... ..Thanks...At the moment we couldn't wish to be in a better place, and at the mo we ARE JUST HAVING ONE BIG HOLIDAY...But soon we'll have to come back down to earth and look for some jobs, otherwise we'll have to sell and move back to the UK....No chance of that happening.

Anyway The neighbours are brilliant, we've had an abundance of Canadians turning up on the door with cookies in hand and a huge welcome, which really made us feel at home....We wish we could have made the break years ago, we feel that we have missed out on soooooo much.

Well All I can say is the wait is worth it....and if you are planning to settle in Calgary, take a 15 min trip outside and settle in the one horse town of Cochrane ...It's FAB.

It sounds wonderful, we're hoping to come to Cochrane next year on a reccie trip.
Our timelines were the same as yours (well a month behind) and we had recieved our medical requests, but it had to be postponed as i became pregnant halfway through the process. It's hard to imagine we would've been there by now.
So pleased it's working out well for you and you've given us a fresh dose of inspiration to get over there asap
Many thanks and good luck with job hunting. Jo xx
