Clinical psychologist
 

Hello,
I'm about to qualify as a clinical psychologist in the UK and looking at options to move to Canada.
Thought I'd say hello to see if anyone was a psychologist and already working there that wouldn't mind a chat.
Also just wanted to say hello whilst I start trawling through the Internet for information.
We'd ideally like to move to vancouver but also open to Toronto.

You'll have a ton of reading to do, both on this site's wiki and on CIC's website.

My first thought is to calculate the number of points you'd score using the CRS... fill it out assuming that you have your designations all sorted.

You also will need to look into whether your qualifications are recognized in Canada, not all of them are (I have no idea about clinical psychology, though!).

Any chance you are aged 30 or under? If so, check out the IEC program, that is by far the easiest route.

Hi, thanks for your reply :-)
I seem to remember doing the points test a couple of years ago so will do that again. Thanks for reminding me of that!
From what I have gathered it can be done but can be tough and mean other exams/supervised practice. I think it depends on the area I want to work in/or service.
I'm not under 30 unfortunately!

I'm not a psychologist (nor do I play one on TV) but I have worked with quite a few as colleagues in my time. My understanding is that a Ph.D is required in order to be registered in most/all provinces. Plus exams set by the provincial registration body. Those with MA or equivalent can qualify as "Registered Clinical Counsellors" (RCC) or similar.

That certainly doesn't appear to be the case in Alberta. I work with a number of them in Calgary and, from their websites, it appears that not many of them have Ph.Ds: Taylor Cark, Fong Ailon, Amundson and Associates

Provincial requirements for registration do seem to vary from province to province, you're right. My limited knowledge in this area is based on BC psychologists, so AB could well be different. In BC there are MA's who are registered, but they have been practicing a while and are grandfathered as far as the doctoral requirement is concerned. Also there are "associate psychologists" with Masters who work in the Corrections field under supervision of a registered psychologist.

If your education is in BC you need a Ph.D to be a registered psychologist, if the Masters is from another Province you can be a registered psychologist in BC. BC is the only province that needs a Ph.D ( I used to hire registered psychologists nationally).
