Mr Chookie used to work in the Downtown Core until recently - what he used to wear to work is the normal "work wear" consisting of trousers and a shirt (no tie)... over that he used to wear a 3 in one jacket he bought from Marks Work Wear, gloves, hat, scarf and a pair of boots. He left his decent shoes at work and changed into them once he got there.
He used to get the BRT bus down center-street to get to work - was packed, so the undo coat, remove hat thing applied, but he advocated leaving the gloves on - as a protective barrier between his hands and all the germs etc on the hand-holds. He got far less colds that way.

and on the topic, i agree with everyone elses' comments. i just wear the same clothes i would wear in australia (or the uk for that matter), and then chuck a winter jacket on top of it. i dont bother with boots... and i dont bother cleaning my shoes either because they just get dirty within 5 seconds anyway
you'll be just fine. bring what you have and buy the rest here. you'd be surprised how little extra clothing you really need
