Hi,

Just go to You Tube and in the search box, type in the same things you put in your post...though change out the Arkwright one for "Open All Hours" as it returns more results. You'll find a collection of clips on each.

http://www.youtube.com/

Don't know if you have a HMV in your area (haven't checked where you are) but here in Calgary, the HMV has a whole Brit section including many of the classic comedies, for purchase.

Happy viewing.

Eamonn & Janet.

I haven't even heard of the first two, (must look them up) but the third one do you mean Open All Hours, with Ronnie Barker? You might find clips on You Tube but I'm sure someone else will be along with a better suggestion.

Try Google, should give you link to where you can get hold of them.

As already mentioned, 'Arkwright the corner shop owner' was the late, great Ronnie Barker and the programme was 'Open All Hours'. I'm taking a stab at 'The Baldy Man' being the character Alf Garnett otherwise known as Warren Mitchell so the sitcom's would either be 'Til Death Us Do Part' or 'In Sickness and in Health'.

Personally I'm amazed that you can remember the name of a second rate comedy like Mind Your Language but not the classic British comedy Open All Hours.

Just googled 'the baldy man' and to my surprise it was actually a TV sitcom. You live and learn. Alf Garnett was much better though!

What about "Dinner Ladies"...

Surely the peak of the UK's comedy classics. Oh the wit.

The baldy man was orginally a character in a bbc comedy clip show "naked video" , it starred Gregor Fisher I believe.

I think the character was also used to advertise hamlet cigars.

I actually saw one of those live; a friend was working for the BBC at the time and got us audience tickets. Don't remember much about the show, but seeing it made was interesting.

For British TV shows and movies that aren't readily available on DVD, you could try:

http://www.britmovie.co.uk/forums/

They have forums for people searching for such things.

For clever dialogue you can't beat Yes (Prime ) Minister.

The brilliant thing about it , no matter what the nationality of the person you show it to , they always claim that's exactly how their government works :)

a lot of these comedies were good in their time, for a much simpler less complicated era (not saying that's a bad thing mind you)but really don't age well in my opinion, are exceptions like fawlty towers ; am still partial to a bit of dads army too,

i like the american veriosn of the office, they've done a good job on it, not made the mistake of others before them in trans-atlantic conversions

- also not a comedy, but the american 'life on mars' seems pretty good too from the first couple episodes

One I'd love to see again is "The Mary Whitehouse Experience", but it would appear either it has never gone to video/dvd or no-one ever copied it as there is no You-Tube :(
