Citizenship....
 

So a friend is possibly heading back to the UK for a number of reasons.
However, they are worried about burning their bridges over here, in case they or their son ever want to live or work out here again.
They have just reached the minimum time lived out here to qualify for citizenship (they were on a TWP for a year or two first) and I wondered if it would be possible for them to apply for their citizenship now, move back but come back to take the exam and have the ceremony?
Anyone got any ideas on whether this is possible? legal?
I know, that if you want to become a Citizen you should really want to be living here, however I have another friend who lived here, got their citizenship and then moved back to Switzerland for their kids to finish school there before moving back here in about 12 years time.

I only got a weeks notice of the test and 2 weeks for the citizenship ceremony. So I guess if they can do that then it may work. Also depends if they have been out of the country much during residency.

If they qualify, and want to spend the few hundred dollars it costs, then apply for the citizenship.

When we were weighing up last year whether we were staying in Canada, we already had our application in. We figured that, apart from the likely very short notice we would get, if we could afford to fly back and take the test, we would have done so. And if we couldn't, well, so be it! For us, it was a case of keeping options open. They should consider what address they want the notification of the test sent to.

As it turned out, we decided to stay anyway. :p

There is no reason why your friends could not do what they propose.

BIM though, that if they are going to be using Calgary as a test centre (and I'm only guessing so because you must live near me!), they don't always offer a test and a ceremony on the same day. Just another thing to think about and anticipate.
