Hi All,

Hope everyone is getting excited and enjoying the build up to the festivities.

Me and the family are heading West on wednesday to check out life over in the rockies area, we are trig to leave before the snow hits too bad over Onatrio way and hope to be in the area for christmas. Now as we are new to canada we don't have a home or a place to rent, so we were looking for suggestions of nice (not too expensive) places to spend christmas and probably new year.

Small Canadian towns, especially ones in the Rockies aren't like quaint well-to-do English villages, where one commutes into a larger town. They are poor, miserable, isolated and have an abundance of social pathologies that poverty bestows.

I'd suggest Calgary if you like crap food and a Country and Western lifestyle ethic. Stay away from Edmonton as its crap.

We recently returned from a holiday for a week in Calgary and a week in the Rockies.

We stayed in Canmore in the Rockies which had loads of places to stay. We were in a ski lodge which was lovely. Not sure if they will hike the prices up for xmas.

Whereabouts are you wanting to stay? If you want to blow a budget I suggest Banff Springs hotel. Stayed there a few years ago - it's lovely but expensive! :D

OK s stay away from small towns good tip. so are we saying calgary, banff, jasper are these ok sort of places for christmas?

Depends on what you're looking to do or see over Christmas. I've only visited Jasper briefly so, apart from the stunning scenery, I don't really know what else is on offer.

Banff is lovely; we often pop up there for a trip out, whether it be for a day or a few hours as its only an hours drive from us. Wide selection of hotels to choose from to suit all budgets too. Lots of restaurants, shops and beautiful scenery of course. We spent Boxing Day last year in Banff with a trip to the hot springs.

Plenty of skiing opportunities there too if that's your thing. Tubing at Norquay in Banff is good fun too. Staying at Banff, Lake Louise is not too far and worth a visit too.

If you can afford to stay in Banff for Christmas, you'll enjoy it. I was there in September for a week, and had a great time. Every second person in Banff seems to be British, so you'll feel at home.

Why not visit Vancouver? People won't rob you, its not full of pikies and if you want to go skiing/snowboarding it's only 15mins away.
