Where's the best place to buy winter children's clothes/boots?

Depends on how old the kids are and what you are planning on doing. We got a cheap suit from Loblaws/Joes one year for the baby who would just sit in the stroller with a blanket anyways. Then we had proper snowsuits from a sports shop that we bough in the sale for the next year but to be honest I quite like the Costcos ones. You have to buy them now for winter but they are warm and durable and fairly inexpensive. Kids grow so fast. Mine are 5,3, almost 2. If you have older kids that want to go snowboarding you might be better to go to a proper sports shop. Snow boots I get from Kiddy kobbler here in Ottawa. Main thing get a proper snow boot I prefer Kamik, the only Canadian made ones but Cougher and Sorel seem to be ok, too. All the Walmart and cheap ones won't last a full winter depending on where you will live. Just speaking for the Ontarion winter.

Sampace how old are your kids? I find....just me...that the kids here are not so hung up on 'brand names', thank heavens. My son, who is 12 is getting very image conscious now, but at least he doesn't demand 'Nike' or whoever the other ones are? We all have Kamik boots, but we bought them in a sale in The Co-op. There do seem to be quite a few more economic options for kids here, surprisingly! Good luck!

We get our kids boots from The Shoe Company, or Sears, or Winners (like TK Maxx)

Snow Jackets and Snow Pants we often buy from Costco - they are in the store already.

My advice would be to buy early - the shops are very seasonal here.

Where are you thinking of moving to? We are just outside of Ottawa and it does get very cold here and loads of snow. To be honest for the most part of last winter my 3 and 1 year old were inside. For that age group Costco is absolutely sufficient. Just got new snowsuits there. Up to age 3 = $30 and age 4-14 $70. Snow boots I would always get good ones, we once tried the cheaper option and after 20mins playing in the snow the kids feet were freezing cold.

Sears is always good. They have loads of sales. I like Joe Fresh as well. I always head to the Thrift store, too. My son will go through 2 pairs of snow boots a season - so his first pair are $100 and his second pair are $10 just to finish the winter. I will also get a spare pair of snow pants to keep in reserve. Even if your kids don't ski or snowboard - they will 'knee slide' every day at school... I am forever patching up knees in snow pants... :thumbdown:

Wherever you choose to buy, what you need to look for are pre-patched knees, bums and ankle cuffs - wherever there will be most rubbing from either sliding or just walking. My kids are 9 and 11 - when they start going to school, if you don't have the right stuff, you'll be patching knees forever. The patches need to be thicker heavy material. If the snowpants are all the same smooth material, don't bother buying - within a week you'll have to patch them. I had many discussions with my new british husband about this - he could not understand why the kids could not be more careful with their clothes and not be on their bums and knees playing in the snow :lol: Sometimes Costco has these, but I have found that they didn't the past couple of years.
As for winter boots, the best ones, regardless of brand, are the ones where you can take the felt booties out to dry. Dry feet=warm feet :)

Agree the ones with the felt boots are great, also you can easily pass them on to the next child , just buy new felt boots = lots cheaper than new boots.

Not sure maybe boys are different but my 5,3 and 1 year old girls never had holes in their pants, summer or winter and they run and slide. Maybe when they get older but for a 3 year old I'd say Costco will do.

Agree with that. Under 5 you don't need to worry so much about holes. Once they are in school though, get your sewing kit ready :lol:
Costco has had some of the best suits at times. I remember one I got for my then 6-year-old girl; they never had holes in them and she wore it 2 years in a row!

Hit and miss with Costco I find with a lot of things but the returns policy is great so I always give it a try. I realized when the 5 year old started full day JK last year that she comes home muddy and dirty from sledging in the school yard lol. But snow suit was fine, but I do like the extra padded ones. Just figured for my little kids it's not worth it spending extra money on. I'll cross that bridge in a couple years I fear :D

used to get my kids snow boots from army and navy cheap as chips and not too shabby..there a nice big store in Londonderry Mall and another on Whyte avenue.

Don't forget to check out second hand (thrift) shops and gently used sales (preschools, playgroups etc) and garage sales - for younger kids, they rarely wear them out and we have picked up sorel boots and snow suits for a few dollars.
