Child Benefit???

Am I entitled to child benefit in Canada? We have been here over three months & both working.

Can anyone advise. Has anyone else got it?

Thanks

See section 2.6 in this wiki.

You will not be eligible for tax based child benefits until you file a tax return. File your 2007 return as soon as you can at the beginning of March.

hi - i see that the universal child benefit is only for children under 6. Does anyone know if there is a child benefit type scheme for children older than this or do all benefits stop on their 6th birthday.
Thanks

The Child Tax Benefit applies to children under 18.

No problems. Remember that Universal Child Benefit and Child Tax Benefit are two different benefits with different rules. You can follow the links in the wiki to the CRA website where it is explained in more detail.

Thanks for reminding me to print out the forms

Just a quick question, does anyone know how they assess your childcare costs??and roughly how much you get back?

We pay over $1400 a month for childcare.....but can't find a calculator or explanation of how it works anywhere on the websites.

You should download form T778 from the CRA's website. Complete this and transfer the deduction to line 214 of your tax return.

This claim MUST be made by the lower earning spouse of a couple, or by a single parent.

This effectively reduces your taxable income so you get back your eligible childcare expenses x your marginal tax rate.
