So, fake smiles and kiddy straightjackets aside, do you see why he's here now?!

So NHS dentists must earn roughly (or less than) half of what a UK NHS GP earns. Is that a fair assessment?

Just been on the dog & bone this morning to the child tax benefit office as we had not heard anything from them since applying for it in Aug. She told me it had been processed and we will get a monthly payment from Nov and in Oct will get it all back dated from May too, so worth applying I say. Its not a large amount but if you are entitled to it ....claim it.
They take your UK earnings for the previous financial year into account when calculating it, so we will probably get more the following year when all earnings will have been in dollars.

Yes. And Blair still ponders why they're scarce...

For those wondering about it, the cut off for one or two child families is at about $97000, but once your taxable income exceeds ~$36k the amount of CTTB per child steadily drops with income. Its rather complicated though and depends on ages and number of kids as well, and is a slightly reduced amount in Alberta, I presume because there is no PST there.

http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/benefits/cc...ayments-e.html

The basic benefit is $1,228 ($102.33 a month) for each child under age 18 (but the basic benefit is different for residents of Alberta).

There is a supplement of $86 ($7.16 a month) for your third and each additional child.

There is a supplement of $243 ($20.25 a month) for each child under the age of seven. This supplement is reduced by 25% of any amount you or your spouse or common-law partner claimed for child care expenses on your income tax return.

A benefit reduction from this amount will occur if your family net income is more than $35,595. For a one-child family, the reduction is 2% of the amount of your family net income that is more than $35,595. For families with two or more children, the reduction is 4%.

A few people keep saying how it's not much, each case is different but it's worth $400 a month to us.
Tia, apply now, the worst they can say is that you are not entitled to it.

More kids...more money? Anyway, there is a handy calculator here that removes all the confusion I created a few post ago!

Yes, i did say each case was different. Not sure about province to province but more kids do mean more money, we have 2.
i do think that your province has a bearing as a portion is provincial and a portion is federal.
HTH's someone, anyone.

The thing is that I did not pay myself for 2004 back in England as I had already sold my business back in 2003 - so I took no income from my business and only a nominal salary as Director of my husband's company. Husband dropped the salary he was taking back at the tail-end of 2004 when I left for Canada, as there is only him over there now. The farm here in Canada won't have made a whole lot of money this year - only sales from hay, a couple of horses and I have some boarders but we are still very much at the start-up stage and the venture that are hoping to make our money, won't be starting till next year. Earnings-wise I very much doubt I will have taken even $10,000 by the end of this tax year, which is why I am still thinking of not applying for it until after I have filed my Return.

I apologise to the original poster for hijacking this thread but hopefully they have been able to learn something too - I sure have, but I am still in a dilemma as to when the best time would be to apply. Although I only have one child, my earnings at the end of this year will be tiny so I will definitely apply.

Just one thing - do they take into account how much money you have elsewhere or is this Children Tax Benefit thingy purely based on your earnings?

Ooooh just did it and the quick assessment looks okay. Thanks for that link Iain. I was most interested in the bit where it asks how many children you have under 18 years old and gives you options up to 25............

Re: Child Benefit

When we applied, the only thing they asked for were proof of earnings. As we had no canadian income (hence no Canadian tax return) we had to show earnings from the UK. Sheila had a P60 and wage slips but i had nothing, they wrote back asking me to declare "world income for 2004 = $0.00"

There are no disadvantages if you apply now and lots of advantages.

Send me a PM if you want to know my personal situation, eg. why i declared no income for 2004 (all above board and legal)

They want your world wide income. Earnings, dividends, interest, profit on the sale of a business etc everything. They may want this for two years depending on which month you landed. They will also want this information for your husband - given that you are still legally married and only apart for work purposes.

What about Stocks and savings? Profit on sale of business - mine was sold in 2003?? Neither of us took any dividends from husband's company.
