Cheques

My partner, has received a cheque (uk) he wants to clear it with the royal bank of Canada, has any one done this? Will we invite any charges or anything?

I have done this with TD Bank - they quote you a rate and tell you what your sterling converts too, then it takes a number of days to clear through the system. Found it a very easy, efficient process. Assume it's similar with the other banks. Not sure if I could do the same with a CAD cheque in the UK though?

Do it regularly. Rate is better than cash, may be a hold on funds, depends on relationship with the bank. Charges depend on your account, we have the VIP account and have no additional charges.

I got a $15 or so sales tax refund cheque from Canada one time I visited and filled out the tax refund form on leaving, and had about $2 left by the time Nat West were finished with it.

Which reminds me, I don't think I ever got the tax refund from the last time I visited the UK and told them to refund to the credit card. I'll have to make sure I get cash in future.

I recently got a cheque as "settlement" for the Equitable Life thing (forget the details) for the grand sum of £17.60. There was no choice about payment method and I imagined it might actually cost me if I paid it into my Canadian bank a/c.

So I mailed it back to my UK bank. Laughable, really, given the cheque was sent from the UK to begin with.
