Cheque books

Our cheque book has arrived in the post! I looked on a website as to how to write the thing correctly....am I correct in thinking that when I pay something with a cheque, this will eventually be returned to me when the payment has been processed, as a form of receipt? Many thanks.

It depends on the terms of your account. Very few banks these days will return canceled cheques unless you pay an additional charge. On my business account they send me a photocopy of each cheque with my monthly statement. On my personal account I can access and print an image of each cheque. For an additional fee of course.

I can view the cancelled cheques online as a pdf. Never had them physically returned to me.

They used to do this many years ago, not any more.

Our account has an option where we can get any cheques we write returned to us. I don't bother with it because a) it's not free and b) what's the point?

(this is for all cheques, not just cancelled ones)

Thank you so much for your responses. The question really came from the fact that the cheque books don't have a counter foil, so nowhere to write what you have paid to whom, and....in the way these things happen, my neighbour was yesterday bemoaning that Rodgers and he are in dispute, and they demanded his cancelled check as proof that he had paid.

You can get a copy anytime for a fee. There is a page at the front of the cheque book to write in cheque number and who it is to.

Each of our cheques has a carbon copy - so much better than a counterfoil as far as I'm concerned.

I don't remember the last time I wrote a personal cheque, I guess I must have a chequebook somewhere around.

My cheque book has a page at the back to list cheques paid, so easy to check up if I needed to get a copy of the cheque. They offered carbon ones, but I didn't really see the point if the bank can let you have a copy if any queries.

No offense intended but is it one of those rubber ones that may perchance cause one to go overdrawn when one forgets to write it down in the register ? Just wondering. ;)

When a cheque is cashed, we get a scanned copy of it attached to the payment detail in our account.
