Checklist for moving to Canada
 

Hello Folks,

I am planning to move from the UK to Canada.

My wife and daughter were born in Canada and we are currently living in the UK.

I wondered if there is a checklist and/or list of best practice and pitfalls of all the things we need to consider as I plan this move over the next year.

E.G.

Tax Efficiency Planning
UK state pensions
Shippers
Independent financial
UK investments
UK property - better to sell before moving?

Wow...this is a great start and scanning the list, many things small and big I have not thought off.

Thanks for pointing me here; I will be consumed for some time.

Is it prudent to have a tax advisor in both the UK and Canada? I was thinking about a UK based advisor with international reach that specialised in moves to Canada.

Would you recommend any companies?

Are your tax affairs particularly complex? If not, then you can do most if not all of it yourself (I have).

I certainly managed the UK tax end myself (using TaxCalc etc.). The when you leave for good, submit an HMRC P85 , but I chickened out and used a Canadian tax lady for my Canadian taxes. I suspect if you could find a Canadian tax adviser who is an ex-Brit and has a good understanding of HMRC, there used to be one on this forum, but I think he has stopped posting and left the forum.

Yes

1. Change your browser setting to allow links to be selected (the links work for me and the OP)
2. Carefully type the links direct into your browser address line
3. Click on the wiki hyperlinks in the forum itself (yellow bar above the forum list, click on 'Canada Immigration Infor' then click on 'To Do Lists - Canada'.

Try changing the https://
to www.britishexpats.com/wiki/Arrival_To_Do_List)
and www.britishexpats.com/wiki/Departure_To_Do_List_(UK_to_Canada)


or use the https rather than http :)

It's because the wiki uses the secure site designation (https) that stops it opening as http only for some, so using the full https or www usually works.. or try a different browser.

Works fine for me, I've not heard of anybody else having issues with that - can you start a thread in Site Feedback about it please so the techie bods can take a look at it? Thx.

Weird, I just assumed it was an accepted thing that the wiki isn't mobile friendly. I've tried it in several different browsers on both iPhone and Android and it just loads a blank page. Even those links posted by Siouxie didn't work for me.

I shall add it to Site Feedback as you requested.

Same for me when i use my samsung tablet. Also posted
