Hello friends , we make calls to family and friends back home in the UK and my mthly cost is around $20 per month with SHAW.

I use whatsapp to speak to my younger cousins , but most of the elders only use a landline or moblile.

Please advice on the best deals ?

I buy credit on skype - don’t know if it’s the cheapest but it’s the most convenient for me 😀

Yep, me too. You dial regular UK landlines and are charged as though it was a local UK call.

We use Localphone - 0.6 cents per minute to a UK landline, from a Canadian landline (so no need to use PCs, wi-fi, mobiles etc. though you can access it that way if you want to)

I've successfully converted my parents (mid 70's/mid 80's) to using an Ipad and Facetime. Which has the advantage of being a) free and b) allowing video calls. I used to use skype and buy skypeout credit but can't remember the last time I had to use it. Everyone is on FT or whatsapp etc.

I use this too but call from my mobile at the same rate. It's fantastic. I have been using it for a year, I call the UK for at least 2 hours a week and I think my total outlay has been $30 and I still have $5 credit.

I think for my needs i will most likely go for Localphone as suggested by Collie and HGertchikov .

I pay 4c a minute to landlines in the UK using my Freedom mobile phone with add-on (included in my monthly fee) - phone calls to a mobile are the same rate.

Ontario Phone Cards :: calling cards by email

I use Goldline (cici) and Lycatel cards - 0.5c and 1c a minute per call to the UK.
Works for me

Some rellies don't have internet, so I just use this for them, the rest of them is Skype and WhatsApp...

I used to use the Cici calling card from Ontario Phone Cards, but now I just use my cell phone - my current Fido phone plan includes 1000 minutes to a select list of countries, including the UK.

If you are calling from a Canada landline to an UK landline just dial 10-10-100 and then the number. I think t is about 2 cents a minute. Just shows up as an extra charge on your phone bill. I know it works with both Rogers and Bell.

Fongo is an option similar to Skype - generally 2c/min and 4c connection fee.
