Changes to TWP programme

Re: Changes to TWP programme
The detailed breakdowns are quite interesting. The top 20 occupations for Oct-Dec don't exactly seem like those that most Canadians would be desperately keen to work in.

8432 Nursery and Greenhouse Workers 5,030 2
6474 Babysitters, Nannies and Parents' Helpers 3,630 3
6242 Cooks 3,090 4
6212 Food Service Supervisors 2,365 5
8431 General Farm Workers 2,150 6
8611 Harvesting Labourers 1,680 7
6661 Light Duty Cleaners 1,275 8
7411 Truck Drivers 1,240 9
5232 Other Performers 980 10
7293 Insulators 920 11
6453 Food and Beverage Servers 770 12
6611 Cashiers 765 13
7252 Steamfitters, Pipefitters and Sprinkler System Installers 555 14

Given that at least 50% of them can no longer access EI (thanks Steven), I imagine these occupations would be reasonably attractive to many.
But if an employer could hire a 3rd world truck driver or waitress for 15% less than a local, what did you think would happen?

Most Canadians? No. But most unemployed Canadians? Yes, I should think so.

"Another change affects how much employers must pay temporary foreign workers. The government is getting rid of a rule that allowed them to pay foreign workers up to 15 per cent less than the prevailing wage for a classification of job. Employers did have to offer foreign workers the same wage as Canadian workers doing the same job in the same geographic region, but the 15 per cent rule drew a lot of controversy and confusion."

Does anyone know how long it's taking currently for a name to be added to a pre approved LMO? It's 3 weeks today they applied to put my name on their LMO.

I can understand anger with immigration fraud, I can't understand (well I can but it's still odd) Daily Mail type fervor or casting all immigrants or wannabe immigrants (and what they have to offer) with the same brush. Reading first on would help. Comprende?

I have a Geordie colleague who's stuck at home at the moment waiting for a new LMO in order to renew his TWP. This is an unexpected hiccup in what should have been a straightforward renewal. Something is amiss in that process at the moment.

I don't know what the 'reality' of the situation is, but I can say it feels like Canada is anti-foreigner for the moment.

Re: Changes to TWP programme
Would you agree that, for example, an unemployed person in NS should have his EI withdrawn if he was unwilling to relocate to a region where a vacancy for his skill existed? What distance would you define is reasonable for the unemployed chap to have to move, a km, 10 km, 100 km, 250 km, 1000km? I trust you will accept that, whatever distance you believe is appropriate, is the same distance you will accept is "local" for the employer to have to cast their net when searching for a "local"?

Re: Changes to TWP programme
ok ,,Iwork in concrete so for a couple o months of the year i sign on EI like all my cradle colleages (due to Manitobas winter).
we work the construction season without holidays and take our holidays in winter. So now thats out o the ,way, someone asked about what is classed as local.
50miles is now classed as local(can only speak for rural MB)this the minimum they will accept on the forms you get sent(on callback to employer) to be eligable for EI.
I have spoken to guys in the same line of work (live nearer the city) on EI and they informed me that at a EI office (they were called in to a meeting) that work was available in BC and they were to apply for the jobs!
or lose EI.
Also to be allowed an LMO jobs must be placed on Canada job bank(coast to coast).
the guys applied for the work in BC,but were not successful....i wonder why!

I would actually like to see some evidence - not someone's conservative belief or some anecdotal story, but actual evidence - research - that Canadians don't take these jobs. I've yet to have read any.
