CBSA Strike? Impact on Pearson Airport?
I've just heard about the CBSA strike.

Just wondering what the impact on Pearson airport will be? Endless queues and chaos? ( and the risk of contracting Covid 19 easier?)

But we are not on strike and if we do go on strike the vast majority of us will be legislated back to work quicker than you can say Bobs your uncle. Pearson is chaos at the best of times even when we are not on strike.

What's the real reason for a strike? Are working conditions and pay for CBSA officers really that bad?

Well if you read the comments section we are all overpaid wannabe Police Officer rejects who are overpaid and underworked and power trip mad. Perhaps not having a contract for over 3 years is the main reason. As for the working conditions and pay this will vary as to where you work and type of work you do. Are there better employers YES and are there worse employers YES. With 3 years to full retirement I really don't care one way or the other just keep paying me every 2 weeks and I will do my job.

Thanks for that insight.
I hope that I'll have smooth travels then.
I've actually never encountered chaotic situations at Pearson airport.

If in a federally regulated industry even if not working for the government, strikes are pointless for the most part because the government can just force you back to work.
Same issue with certain industries in the US, airlines for example well known not to negotiate new contracts for years, but why should they, the employees cannot strike without the government saying it's okay, employees are powerless and company has the upper hand. Pretty common to see airline workers go 3-5 years without a new contract.

I almost ended by working life by being on strike, which was NOT what I wanted to do.
Luckily the 2 sides came to an agreement a couple of days before the start of the strike. I didn't get any benefit from the settlements, but I did get my last days at work with my long-time colleagues, and the farewell party.

If the government did it to Canada Post carriers, it would be bad optics if they didn't do the same for CBSA. I believe Air Canada workers were legislated back to work a decade back.

Airport operations may be impacted today as a result of a peaceful labour demonstration by CBSA workers represented by @psac_afpc. If you are departing from Pearson today, please consider leaving early to account for potential delays.
So glad they chose a peaceful demonstration.!

The union, which has been without a long-term contract for CBSA employees since 2018, served notice Tuesday of its planned work-to-rule campaign. Some 90 per cent of front-line border workers are deemed essential, a designation that prevents them from walking off the job.

But equally they will be working to rule, or exactly to the book
So I would expect slower through customs, more questions being asked, and long line-ups.
Have to say, I don't blame them one little tiny bit!

After more than three years without a contract and unprecedented mobilization by FB members across Canada, the PSAC-CIU bargaining team reached a tentative agreement with Treasury Board and CBSA late Friday, August 6 following a 36-hour, round-the-clock, marathon negotiation session.
