Car Sales
 

Hi,
I am planning on moving to NS and have been in the motor trade for 15 years as a sales manager. I don't expect to start as a manager but could do with knowing what a good car salesman could earn in his first couple of years?

Would this not depend on how accomplished you were as a salesman?

Can't speak for NS but my Brother in Law was a car salesman for 10yrs+ here in NL. His earnings varied tremendously because it's typical for a car salesman to be paid on a 100% commission basis. So, less sales = less dollars! I believe an income of $50k or more is possible but by no means guaranteed. Also, long hours, evening and weekend work comes with the job but I suspect you already know that.

I would have thought that being a sales manager and using the word "good" should have answered that!

Well it's a little different in Canada for a start.

Most automotive sales jobs are on a straight commission basis it's a bit harder to predict what an average wage would be. I've heard of people making as much as 11k in a month but this isn't going to be all the time. Some months you could be making very little or nothing at all as things may be quiet and as you know at the minute the car industry is a little slower.

Used sales typically have more earning potential and more customers. And some brands may attract more sales than others but I'm sure you know all this anyway. I guess what you earn will all come down to the hours you put in and where you work. I've you're planning a reccie trip you could maybe arrange a few days in a dealership to watch how it all works in Canada and get speaking to the sales team about their earnings.
