we went with AMA after having full no claims in the Uk and were told that it makes no difference you start from scratch here!

Some companies do though, so it's worth looking around or going through a broker if possible.

That's actually not true. The reason you got away with it is because the broker or the underwriter didnt understand the difference between no claims and no claims discount. Protected NCB doesnt really exist in Canada, so it's not a concept they understand.
Insurers here, in any Province, only care about how many claims you've had.

So, our proof of no claims only ever seems to state up to about 9 years, even though we've been claim free for well over that. This is because it's the maximum certain insurers give you regardless of how long you've been claim free. How do you get proof of being accident free if they will only go on the no claims bonus years?
I don't think there is, but is there a database you can go to like the DVLA to print out your history??
Also, with Canadian insurers, how many years to they typically go up to with their discount? If it's similar to our no claims bonus timescale then that would work out ok anyway.

Yes. In Alberta, for example, you can obtain your driving history at any Registry office.
