Car insurance for new CAD residents

Re: Car insurance for new CAD residents
The important thing people from the UK fail to grasp about Canadian car insurance is that, in Canada, the vehicle is much less important to the premium than it is in the UK. Unless your vehicular choice is RHD Ferrari vs. LHD Dodge Caravan there's really no need to consider the relative cost of insurance in choosing a car.

BC doesn't have the most expensive insurance, the territories have way higher rates, and it's not because there's a monopoly, Saskatchewan has government insurance and low rates.

I was used to the insurance rate for the value of the car in the UK so always tried to get the lowest insurance group vehicle. I didn't realise that it didn't work quite the same here. Off T buy that Ferrari!

You may want to reconsider that.

Do you know of any good car dealerships that sell secondhand cars (small types) either in Nanaimo or Victoria area? We currently drive a very fuel efficient Hyundai. As we probably won't leave the island for the first few years we would be looking for something similar. Cheers! [/QUOTE]
Hi there are lots of places for 2nd hand cars around Victoria. I got mine from the dealership so you might find your Hyundai vehicle at Hyundai in Victoria. There is Galaxy Motors in Colwood which have a wide selection. Their jingle is rather annoying! But memorable with the awkward dance too!
There are many places to get cars. Many dealerships around Douglas Street in Victoria and out on the Old Island Highway in Colwood. PM me if you would like further info. I don't go to Nanaimo often enough but they have loads too!

I think one of the main reasons for the differences in insurance rates from jurisdiction to jurisdiction is to do with the complexity of the liability laws. In Alberta it's entirely bog standard comparative negligence, if you have an accident, then it's usually 50/50 liability but it can be 70/30 or whatever based on the facts. Other provinces (especially Ontario) have fantastically more complex laws, Ontario has a list of accident diagrams that establish the liability and you can end up arguing over which diagram is relevant or not etc.
Unsurprisingly car insurance costs a lot less in Alberta.
