Default Car insurance...is it that high?

I've heard car insurance in Canada is really high. Is this true?

I think it's high enough here in Virginia, where it's more some $130 for my 5 year old Ford...is it more expensive in Canada? Just curious since we might move there some years off

In short yes. However, if you're married to a Canadian it's a little easier.

For me alone (A 26 year old driving in UK since I was 17) - insurance in Calgary on any car is over $4,000 per year. However, if my Canadian wife is the primary driver on the policy, the total annual premium for both of us with full cover is 'only' $1,200 per year.

Added: Try a quote for yourself on www.kanetix.com - you'll need to fake a postcode from wherever you want to live.

:scared:

More than $4000 a year? I guess we would be listing my hubbie as the primary driver then LOL. Thanks for the link-I will check it out

We have government insurance here in Saskatchewan. I don't think its as high as other places. I pay about $1,000 a year for my 2002 Hyundai Elantra. It depends on the make and year of the car. You can pay monthly which makes it easier to budget for.

Liz is right. One thing great about Saskatchewan is the cheap insurance. In the U.S. I was paying close to 1800 per year. Here I pay just under a 1000 for the year. You can't beat 78 bucks per month. Although job opportunities are few and far between here in Regina.

BC, SK & MB are all public insurance companies (provincial government crown corporations) and the rates are lower than provinces with private insurance companies providing coverage.

In the last 2 years, many provinces serviced by private companies saw some pretty wild increases in policies (some 35+%). Whereas, BC, for instance saw only 7%.

Any way you look at it though, it's expensive. Just remember to look at what your insurance covers... don't let just the cost determine your decision. Some carriers, for instance, won't cover Hit and Runs... so in the long run... not worth that $60. saving!!

Question: Would a Canadian driving license lower my car insurance by alot. At present i have a UK license for about 7 years now, guessing from the other posts my insurance on this is gonna be high!
How about Canadian driving test? just a one off test or theory etc... like in UK?

You're only legally allowed to hold one driving licence in Alberta, so technically you would have to surrender your UK licence when you write the theory exam.

You also can't buy a car in Alberta without holding a local licence.

I guess it depends where you are headed, but you might not get much choice.

Technically you can buy a car on a UK license in Canada… however its all gets a little complicated…
The major hurdle is you can only get plates with a Canadian licence, Without plates you can’t drive the car..
You will also find it very difficult to get insurance on a foreign license as well.
The simple answer is to go get that license as fast as possible… the test is not hard and if you pick a quite day, and try for cancellations its possible to do the written test and the driving test and walk out with a G2 in a day…

Is this most insurance companies, or just certain ones? I wonder if they could be sued for refusing a claim??

Anyone know what insurance companies in Alberta are like? I went to the web site to get a quote..answered all the questions and after all that it said it could not get a quote for me LOL.
