Car Insurance

When trying to get a quote, I have driven in UK for 8 years but zero time in Canada , does this count for anything ? Also any cheap insurers that people have used? Looking to get a cheap car next couple days I live in Alberta.

Thanks

Do you have any proof of no claims from your old insurers in the UK as well as a Driver Abstract from the DVLA? These "can" help however expect to pay a lot more than you would have in the UK.

If you are getting a cheap car you will only need the equivalent of Third Party Fire and Theft so that will save you some money straight away.

As for recommended companies I've had good quotes from Intact through a Broker who is able to recognise prior driving experience. A lot of companies simply won't be interested in recognising previous experience though so you will likely need to find a broker who is clued up on foreign driving experience.

I'm currently with Canadian Direct who are fairly reasonable as well.

As said, it counts if you have proof of a no claims history from your previous insurers. Without proof of a no claims history then you would get nothing.

Not sure of any value in a drivers abstract for insurance, I have never used one or needed one.

When I was in Alberta and with State Farm all they wanted was proof of no accidents, they never asked for or wanted proof of no claims, they gave me a huge discount once I provided my driving record, but it doesn't include claims info just tickets, accidents and the like.

This was 10 years ago. Only place that ever asked for no claims was ICBC.

As underwriters normally obtain a copy of abstracts directly from the provincial licensing authority 'you' are not usually asked to provide a copy. Assuming the OP does not have a driving history in Canada, then providing such a document from DVLA will help an underwriter better assess the risk and hopefully result in a better premium.

If you do a search of previous threads, you will find tons of posts of companies others have gone with... have you done that?

Did you have any luck finding car insurance that recognised your UK experience? I am in Ontario and still struggling to do so!

I used to use Johnsons who took into account UK history, changing as of Monday though only because I get corporate rate through work who will also take into account UK history
