Car Insurance
Were finally in Calgary and looking for some car or auto insurance that would take our driving history and claim history from the UK into consideration. I have found one so far and I was wondering is anyone else can recommend anyone else so that I can make comparisons.
The one that I have found is Canadian Brokerlink.
I have heard TD insurance does, but when I called they said they didnt.

Re: Car Insurance
Cant directly help you but we found TD was not useful to get off the starting block with insurance but very good to switch to once you had 6 months insurance in Canada.
We used State Farm for a 6 month insurance period when we got here, then switched to TD. Our premium dropped from $220 to $147 with nothing more than a phone call.
I would recommend taking car and any home insurancewith the same company as it will get you a discount. TD gave us an 8% discount from our car insurance when we took out home insurance. That took it down to $137 ish.

We are in Quebec and we used ESSOR (a broker) to get a policy through Intact. They even took my no claims bonus in the UK into consideration meaning it was cheaper for me to get insurance than my Canadian wife!

Got our insurance through http://www.wawanesa.com/CN/EN/automobile-insurance.html Click on the link to find a broker near you.
We had a problem at first, as they would not accept our "proof of no claims bonus letter" Had to get it reworded to say (how many) "years accident free" you have?

Re: Car Insurance
You have to be able to prove history of no claims by letter from your past insurers, insurers don't just take your word for it. Few if any Canadian insurers accept 'no claims discount' anymore as proof of claims history as you can insure against the loss of no claims.

Re: Car Insurance
unless i can get a letter from the Motor Insurers Database people to prove that i've never had an accident...
as it stands i think my current insurers would only give me proof of no accidents in the last 3 months (from when i started my policy with them)
is Motor Insurance in Canada as much of a "legalised scam" as it is in the UK? For example insurers taking huge premiums from customers, then if the requirement to claim is invoked, they try every technicality in the book to wriggle out of paying? Such as not declaring the floor mats you had put in the car weren't factory fit?

You get a basic liability coverage, (which is not enough) and pay extra for $1m to $5m, depending on what you choose.

we used Anna at Silvercrest Insurance in Calgary - they were much cheaper than anywhere else and I think they accepted our UK no-claims (we had a letter from the UK insurance company as proof) - its work shopping around and you also get a discount if you take your other insurances (ie home insurance) through the same broker (even if you dont do it at the same time).

Re: Car Insurance
also be aware that windscreen insurance is really expensive and often excluded from the cover here - but different from the UK
