It's not a matter of how many kids YOU have. It's a matter of how many kids you need to transport at any given time. When they get to the age where they have a bundle of friends and go on playdays and outings an ordinary car is limited.

We have an estate car which is handy, but you can still only put 3 kids in the back seat. That's our two and one friend. Block your ears when the arguments start about whose friend goes!!

Kids are not allowed in the front seat if they're younger than 12 (I think!).

A "Van" or crossover is a godsend... you can put 5 or 6 in the back, all with seatbelts!

That's probably why they're so popular.

I paid $16500 (including taxes) the basic car plus Auto and A/C all I need. Much cheaper than the Carolla and more versatile. It even has 3 THREE glove compartments, 2 in front of the passenger seat and 1 in front of the driver.

From Routan/Santa Fe to a Yaris is a long stretch. The Yaris is a small vehicle and I do not believe would carry 4 adults in comfort on a long journey.

We got by with a sedan and with two kids, never had a problem. But that was in the days of 1100sq ft homes and stay at home mums.
Glad I don't have to bring up a family in todays world.

Don't plan to. We buy a car to suit ourselves not others.
No problem for us travelling to Montreal or Washington DC to visit our kids.
It costs about $35 in gas to drive to Washington.

Not really when consider that the corolla comes standard with ABS. Which is must, especially when considering the winters.....It pays every time to have ABS.

Each to their own, but when a vehicles major selling point is determined by the number of glove compartments it has, it doesn't suggest a very dynamic choice.

What do you mean by dynamic?
I have always bought a car for convenience. Most of the time it's parked in our underground parking.
It will be 1 year old next Tues and has 4600kms on the clock ( we spend winters in San Diego wher we use the bus)
I do not feel a car has to be any more than simple transport. ABS is a inexperienced drivers crutch.
Been driving since 1950 and never had an accident.

Don't be mean. Nothing wrong with a Yaris very sensible choice. They are brilliant little cars.

ABS have been proven to be much more than that. You can avoid objects while braking hard at a panic stop. But if you find driving without it unnecessary then it is your choice and you've got a good deal than will last you many many years and will hold it's value. Just change the oil regularly. They really great cars that you can't go wrong with.

Poppy cock.

ABS can brake and release the brakes more than 15 times a second - many times more than the most experienced driver. This allows you to steer around am incident and brake at the same time.

Never assume that because you've never had an accident means that you aren't going to have one - it may even be completely out of your hands (drunk driver etc.), in which case I'd take any safety feature I could get.

lol you clearly know nothing about modern technology.

and personally if you have been driving since 1950- well i'm not being disrespectful to you or anyone around your age but it makes you of the older generation who will have far less reaction time and muscle strength needed to press the pedals. i'd recomend you invest in abs as one day it may well just save your life, your passengers and mine if i'm unlucky enough to have you behind me and i need to stop in a hurry. you'd be plain daft not to have abs on a road car.

or will you be telling me that power assisited brakes and steering are for the weak and feeble drivers

and also what the yaris has to do with this thread i'll never know.

but i'd def not get the VW or the santa fe there are better choices of either out there but if they where the only choice the santa wins

I didn't say a bad word about the Yaris. 'Brilliant' is an interesting description, though - I'd suggest 'adequate'.

IMO, if vehicle choice is made on the basis of the # of glove boxes compared to the competition, then an interesting or dynamic choice of transportation obviously isn't a main consideration, which Keith confirmed in his reply.

Good one Keith. LOL. Have you tried a Viagra and Yaris combo yet ? To heck with ABS brakes and all that. Is this vehicle suitable for "parking" ? The younger generation might need to know !! Maybe those glove boxes can be put to other uses !! Maybe some scientific study is in order here !

Stay away from german cars - the maintenance is a killer (i'd say close to double of a north american car). I have an Audi and have to sell a lung every time it gets serviced. I also find that even during the warranty period there always seemed to be something going wrong....
