Car hidden costs

When looking at car manufacturer websites for Canada, all prices are quoted as MSRP. I assume this does not include provincial and government taxes, road taxes, etc. Can anyone help me please on providing information on what a total "on the road" price of a car would be for an MSRP value of say $20,000 for the province of Ontario? Typical insurance costs would be most appreciated too.

Are prices really that much cheaper than UK?

Thanks.

Hi try this site they cover most of the Makes available in Canada with discounts available on most yes prices definitely cheaper than UK although the UK has improved quite a lot in the last few years http://www.cars4u.com/consumer/

Just had a quick poke on there - checked against a dealer we have been talking to, the online price worked out at about $1.5K more expensive than the dealer price and didn't have $600 worth of extras (electric power kit) included either. That's before we get to point of haggling, as his car is in stock on the forecourt, no trade in, I have the cash - badabada bing - a great way to work up a deal :)

Guess you takes your chances and plays the game ? Seems like a good tool for comparing prices against similar models, wish it let you sort by final cash price rather than MSRP though, that would be easier. The lease and finance info is helpful mind.

Prices are certainly cheeper.

You will have to add GST and PST (in Ontario), and there are additional taxes for A/c and a "gas guzzler" tax that depends on the cars economy (most of them!) if you buy new. Its been a while since I had a new car, but it was a few hundred, but less than 1k for those two.

there will also be delivery charges to get the vehicle to the dealer, typically a couple of hundred.

If you buy used GST and PST are also applied to used vehicles (Oh yeah, they tax you on the used ones, so they collect on each sale  )

Not sure if the air and gas tax are provincial or federal

No one pays MSRP unless its a really popular new model. What you need to find is the "invoice" price that the dealer pays for it, and beat them down as close to that as you can. Probably best to do that in person rather than on the internet. Walking away tends to get there attention.

Insurance for a newcomer to canada is high, talking several thousand!

After 7 years her with no claims I pay $1700 for me and my wife for the two cars. You can probably double or maybe tripple that as a guess.

Not half... got two years no claims transferred (10% reduction) and on a half decent car full coverage plus all the extra coverage for me and missus it is in the region of $2800 - yikes ! Mind you that is one quote, pre shopping around/haggling process. Still scary mind you. :(

Yep the prices are scary... but not half as scary as the driving...

Here in Toronto I see on average one crash a day... admittedly most are slow rear end shunts at traffic lights and railway crossings...but it all adds to the insurance costs.. :(
and this is all year round not just winter

That sounds like Toronto!
You must have forgotten what it is like driving over her in the UK, fast and dangerous. I drove every day from Shropshire to Coventry last week and saw 3 serious accidents on the motorway, one five car pile up. And a nice bash up in Coventry, so that makes 4 accidents in 5 journeys. It always amazes me how speedy and poor the drivers are here! And for the people driving on our country roads in Shropshire! The mind boggles, how can they see around corners?

Don't forget the $110 for the number plate! I read recently that the makers of "Britains Worst Drivers" were thinking about doing a "Canadas Worst Drivers" show! I think it will be a long series. See http://toronto.craigslist.org/eve/56445721.html
