Just for fun I thought I'd chip in. We have a Dodge Journey and a Toyota Yaris. When we "pop" to the shops for milk and the freebies (newspapers), we use the Yaris. When we all pile in with a picnic, beach toys, chairs, propane BBQ etc etc, we use the Journey. When we pick up rellies from the airport and we all want to greet them, we use the Journey (it has 7 seats when you want them. When we drop the kids at school we use the Yaris.
Neither is "better" for everything! __________________ |

Re: Car brands/models in Canada ?
Back on topic, for a second, we have a Kia Soul for the funky, roomy, economical hatchback thing and a beater Suzuki XL7 for the need an SUV to tow a trailer and drive through a foot of snow thing. The XL7, is of the vintage that was a proper body on frame 4x4 with low range coupled to a reasonable frugal 2.7l gas engine. An equivalent to a Shogun if you like.
The growth of the Crossover has spawned some awful vehicles IMHO and in particular, as Mr Oakvillian, I think it was, the rise of the 2wd crossover (Escape, Terrain, Santa Fe etc.). These have replaced estate cars and give you the advantages of a high up driving position together with all the handling and performance disadvantages coupled with not actually having AWD/4x4 when you need it. The lease on our Soul is up next year and with a second small person on the way, our thoughts are already turning towards what to replace it with. I suggested a miniva (in jest) but the Mrs threatened to kill me. |

Ah and another question: imagine I do decide to buy a used car, are there any companies who provide independent vehicle checks, just like in the UK?
