car

Hi ,
Not sure if this is the right place to post this question but just after some advice, We lived in Canada for a short length of time and have a 7 seater car that we have kept in storage, not sure whether we should sell it at a huge loss or bring it to the Uk any suggestions?

You probably need to weigh up the costs involved. It may be less of a 'loss' to sell as opposed to shipping the car over and then paying duty or other fees on it. You may want to check with UK insurance, sometimes they charge more for an imported car.

Just a thought. Good luck.

left hand drive large vehicle imported from canada, can't imagine that will go down well, and with shipping, charges in the UK, loss you make on exchange rate, seems still a huge loss, but with much less hassle if you sell it here, perhaps through a showroom that charges a small percentage to sell the car on.

Re: car

it will also depend on uk import laws on cars.

if its under 10 years old, it will need an sva test, which means it needs a model report.
now if the model report dont exist for that make model of car (quite possible) then it will cost thousands to get one done, so it can be sva'd

if its over 10 years old then its just an mot and easy.

Shipping from Edmonton to Liverpool costs around $3k and takes about a week - if that's any help. Insurance wise in the UK it's no more to insure a left hooker in my experience - sometimes depending on make and model it has been cheaper. Can't tell you about import duty and SVA stuff as left all that to the purchaser (Stepdad).

Oh and to have a look at UK resale prices look up something like classic american and check out the classified ads.

Speaking as someone whose done the import a car job, I can speak from experience.

You will have needed to have owned and used the car for 12 months (and be able to prove it - with things such as bank statements to show you lived there during the time claimed) to HMRC to be duty and VAT exempt. If not you will get 10% duty on the value of the vehicle at purchase price, and VAT on the value of the vehicle, shipping charges AND duty - yes it's a quadruple-whammy!

On the other hand, it's nice having a unique vehicle here. When you come to sell it however, it's not as simple as getting a trade in at a car showroom!

Hope this helps.

When I lived back in the UK. I owned 2 American cars. To insure them it is a lot cheaper than insuring a UK car but that is only through an insurance company that specialise in American cars. As for when you come to sell it, it does narrow down the market. As not many people go looking for them. Depends on the kind of vehicle it is whether it is attractive enough like a Viper but if its a Dodge Caravan I would leave it here
Hope that helps you to decide also.

I completely agree with cargomatic. One of my fave cars I had in the UK was a GMC Astro van thingy - it was a starcraft customised van that had been lowered - lovely it were, we did part ex' that one out for a Chev Impala though.

We are a wierd family - in the UK we had predominately US cars and now here we have a couple of brit cars:rofl:

 Of all the cars you could choose, you picked a G6 and a Sebring? I suppose the G6 is OK in the same way that there's not much to complain about in a Vauxhall Vectra, but a Sebring?

LOL I bought it in 2002 from Holland, I liked the Intrepid I had when I was over there and it was the nearest I could get :D

Got a modded G6 GT Sedan which works very nicely :)

One or two:rofl: OK! I am currently driving a '73 Spitfire (love it!!! rattles and all). Hubby is driving a mix between '74 Torino, Lincoln Blackwood or Lincoln Navigator or Ford Bronco. We also have a Rolls that needs some work (another one comming that needs no work is on it's way) another couple of Torino's and a Mustang and a Ford Prefect shell to turn into a dragster. We've just sold a couple of range rovers - for some reason everything here comes in pairs - you buy one, then a better one turns up so that gets bought:rofl:

This is a completely different set of cars to what we had this time last year and different again to the year before - that's the trouble when there is a mechanic in the family and a wife that say's 'if you want it buy it!' I am just thankful we don't live on an acreage. Trouble is we do have to get rid of one or two cars as they just don't get used enough and that's not good for them, so there are preparations going on to get shot of a couple of Torino's and the Blackwood has to go - to have two Lincolns is just greedy:rofl:

(I like the look of the Sebring myself I know others don't).

I'd find it a pain in the arse at the UK car parks, with the ticket barriers on the "wrong" side ;)

Na you just use free car parks or the ones where you walk to the machine to get a ticket:rofl:
