I'm loving the random 'bylaw' question at the end of each post :D

Is there one you haven't broken yet?

Not many. Things for which I've been fined, without knowing the relevant laws existed:

- wine with picnic

- playing pick up football, public park, no permit

- allowing small children to paddle in lake, no permit.

There's a law against everything here. I've half a mind to buy a leaf blower and fertilize the lawn so I can add to my collection of curious tickets.

I wonder where you actually have to go to get said permits, and how much they cost (if you wanted to be a model citizen  ) ? Also, are you supposed to get one for every occasion, or is their an annual paddling / park footie multipass, like Disney?

I had an insane correspondence with city hall over the pick up football. They said we couldn't play pick up, we'd have to join a league, because otherwise we didn't have appropriate public liability insurance for "physical activities in parks". Over some months, I cited more and more extreme examples of physical activities :

- frisbee with children, technically not allowed, the police turn a blind eye

- bonking, ok in the car (subject to obscenity laws) but a foot placed on the ground for leverage is a problem under the bylaws.

Parks and Rec cited some insanity of their own. There's a cliff in the park. Someone bicycled off and sued because there was no sign "do not bicycle off this cliff".

In short, Toronto Parks and Rec have a problem with liability law suits and, as a result, nothing's allowed.

The lake business is a problem in Southern Ontario as almost all water front and often the lakes themselves are privately owned. The owner's association, and/or the local council fine people who are not owners who want to use the lake. There's no equivalent to the right to roam so, although there's a lot of countryside here, access to it is actually more limited than in England.

Can you shoot raccoons in Edmonton?

In Canada - as in Britain - you have a right to your own set of opinions .... but just like in Britain, you don't have any right to your own set of facts. In this country, Statistics Canada is clearly the most authoritative source regarding demographic facts on Canada's cities. I'll take what they say over the rags - with their political agendas - you like to read and quote. Do you really consider the Toronto Sun an authority - on anything? LOL.

Can one lawfully drink alcohol in a park in Edmonton?
I don't believe so. A rule like that is why Canada has fewer neds, chavs and other drunken hooligans wandering our streets than in Britain. Do you really want to bring Britain's problems to Canada? I think we have enough problems already, although alcoholism in Canada is far less a problem now than it was several decades ago. Britain should adopt a few rules from Canada; it would make the place more liveable.

It's my primary guide to the opinions of the cradle Canadians.

In Edmonton is it legal to prepare and serve food in the open air?

Only a minuscule percentage of lakes are privately owned - even in southern Ontario. In the vast majority of cases, the public can use the lake. Access is more of an issue, but other British expats have told me that access is far more available that in England.

Of course you can't legally discharge a firearm in urban areas; and raccoons are not numerous enough to be a problem in Alberta.

It's become pretty clear that you have little clue what constitutes proper behaviour in this country. I can only suggest that you get a copy of the Criminal Code of Canada as well as a copy of the bylaws for the city in which you reside, then familiarize yourself with both.

I should have thought I was demonstrating a reasonable familiarity with the laws in Toronto. I'm asserting that, contrary to the hopes of a poster above, most of this nonsense applies across the country. That said, it's not critical to me as I'm not going to Edmonton.

In Edmonton, do bars have happy hours ?

Can't you two just agree to disagree.

You're acting like a pair of two year olds. Mildly entertaining two year olds, but two year olds non the less.:)
