hi everyone , having just returned from a 3 month FANTASTIC stint in N.S.

We have come to the conclusion that canadians elaberate "A" 's

as in van = vaaaaaaaaaaan

gas = gaaaaaaaaaaaaaas

which i must confess i like to take the p out of my relatives all in good taste you understand

anyway been back 3 weeks today and already feel we were back 3 years
ah well , roll on july ...................

My 'observations' - based on my experience.

word: UK / Canada (west coast)
vitamin: vit-a-min / vIte-a-min
oregano: o-re-GAN-o / o-REG-gan-o
innovative: IN-ni-vit-tive / in-no-VATE-ive
butter: butter / budder (well all the double tt words)
mirror: meer-rah (or something) / meerrrr-rrrerrr or just meerrrrrrrr
privacy: priv-i-see / prIve-va-see
weekend: week-END / WEEK-end
yogurt/yoghurt: yahg-gurt? (? can't remember at the moment) / YO-gurt
fillet: fill-it / fe-lay
Van Gogh: van GOFF or other variations / van-GO

My borther in law on his first trip to the UK some years back, kindly went up to the Bar to get the round in....and very loudly said to the barmaid.."yep i'll take a pint of your laay-ger please!!," of course we very softly translated ..."can we have one pint of larger please, when you have a minute...dont rush!!! thank you.!!! :beer: , :D

As a Canadian, this phrase is not used often. In fact, the only people in Canada who might utter such words would be those with a British background or Canucks like me who studied Shakespeare. :)

To help you:

We pronounce basil as bay-zil.
Tomato: toe-MAY-toe
Route: root
Herbs - its a tricky one. I myself prounounce it as "erbs". But I've heard that's the American pronunciation - so I try to say "herbs" but the past keeps sneaking back in there!

And anything that has a "tu" is "too", not "chu"...eg:

Not really pronunciation - more 'language', but when we went on our very first food court expedition - on asking for Burger and chips, we were given a burger with a packet of crisps......lol (wondered why she was searching high and low - for the crisps :D:D)

Crisps = Chips
Chips = Fries

(and peeps think they'll be fine, because we (English/Canucks) speak the same language ;))
