Default Canadian TV play PAL signal

Hi all, need some help with buying a new TV here in Canada.

Bit of an old chestnut this one, but here goes ...

I have some VHS tapes from UK, along with a UK player + voltage convertor so I can play the signal out to the TV, but a Canadian NTSC telly just plays out Black and White.

We also need the new TV to play out the NTSC signal from our Canadian equipment.

So my question is does anyone know which TV's will play out both NTSC and PAL signals. I'm really after answers from folks who are actually doing it with specific TV models.

many thanks

good luck with this one . . . I so wish we had brought our UK tv for the exact same reason!!!
I've resorted to transfering Vhs onto DVD and playing through a multi region player. . .. very frustrating!!

There are a few companies that sell multi-region TVs:

There is another one I cant remember right now I might post it later if I can remember it. I doubt very much you will get a multi-region from Best Buy or Future Store.

I came to Canada almost 21 years ago and in those days I used to have family mail me VHS tapes and I'd play them on a unit similar to these....there are many others available now.
http://www.220-electronics.com/dvd/combo.htm You don't need a UK TV or VCR player this way, just a regular North American TV is fine.

I still have a couple of these players but since then I 'graduated' to downloading torrents of the shows I wanted to watch and now just watch stuff on the BBC Iplayer or live if the viewing time is ok....

Neither my Samsung LCD nor my Panasonic plasma will take a PAL input, much to my disgust.

I've read on here previously that Sony LCD's will, but haven't verified this myself...

Just wanted to add that if your PAL source (DVD player, VHS tape player etc) when plugged into a NTSC TV produces a Black & White signal then you could get a PAL to NTSC converter. This will turn it from B&W to colour.

http://www.merconnet.com/product_inf...roducts_id=453

If your PAL source when plugged into NTSC TV does not produce any picture then the converter route will not work.

Another way of getting a PAL device onto a NTSC TV is checking if the PAL device supports either HDMI or Component outputs. Both of these connection types are not region specific. For example my PAL wii is connected via Component cable to a NTSC TV.

Well at least you can watch some old classics.

Or Young Frankenstein.
