Agreed, with the glaring exception of the deluded Leafs fans. But to continue the anti-NA pro sports business model rant, the silly way the "drafts" (draughts) are conducted is another example.

A lousy club gets first pick on e.g. graduating college players (more in the NBA and NFL than in the NHL where its mostly kids and furriners): this is utterly incomprehensible and IMHO an abuse of human rights.

Its not incomprehensible at all, The draft, along with the salary spending caps is the whole basis of the franchise system and prevents the team with the most money snowballing success into more and more success as happens in European Footy.

Basically the draft acts as a buffer for unsuccessful teams to recruit top talent, and prevents budgets spiralling out of control in pursuit of success on the field.

It may suck for whatever young man gets drafted to bum**** Nebraska or wherever, but for $20M a year Im sure they will get over it, and they always have the chance to walk away.

If you are unsuccessful you should be relegated not rewarded with the pick of the so called best young talent..and its a farce like picking teams in the school playground..having 1st dibs...what about the poor jeffs who are draft pick 75 etc..how do you feel?

Right, were it about sport.

But its not, its about entertainment, and primarily about making as much money as possible. Its the original "Reality TV" show if you like. Its unscripted entertainment, Stakes are high, someone wins, lots of people lose over the season, people root for their favourites, there is much drama, there are loads of TV shows about what goes on behind the scenes. American Idol without the singing, only with the same contestants year in year out.

The draft is one of the keys to the business model in terms of keeping the games relatively competitive, and therefore the punters interested and coming back with their $$$ via watching on telly and bringing in advertisers. That's where the real money is made.

Poor Jeff at 75th pick probably isnt too cut up about his $2M or $5M a year

Exactly NHL isn't a sport at all..its a closed shop where the only way in is to buy your way in..and i do notice they trade off or buy picks with other teams so not quite how it seems.

I wonder when the issue of salary caps will be brought up and if its a good or bad thing?

In professional sports, a salary cap (or wage cap) is an agreement or rule that places a limit on the amount of money that a sporting club can spend on player salaries. The limit exists as a per-player limit or a total limit for the team's roster, or both. Several sports leagues have implemented salary caps, both as a method of keeping overall costs down, and to ensure parity between teams so a wealthy team cannot entrench dominance by signing many more top players than their rivals. Salary caps can be a major issue in negotiations between league management and players' unions, and has been the focus point of several strikes by players and lockouts by owners and administrators.

American Major league sports are Sports Entertainment Business

UK footy clubs started off about sport, but over time money has moved them in the same direction. Relegation just ads an added edge to the drama and raises the stakes for failure.

As a competitive spectacle you can argue the US model promotes a more even playing field and closer competition at the top. There is less drama though for sure.

Gee, you found the wikipedia entry on it, good for you

Salary Caps are certainly a good thing for the sustainability of the business as a money making enterprise. (just ask Leeds Utd)

They are almost certainly a good thing for creating closer competition between teams within a league.

They are not a good thing for players who only have a short window to make as much money as possible.

Salary caps have no place in "sport' though. Part of sport is that if you are a winning team, that success breeds success, the club makes more money, the best players want to play for you.

Salary Caps are part of a business model, not sport. The people running the majority of clubs would love a cap I suspect, but the people running the top clubs that set the agenda in world Football I expect want to use their financial advantage to continue to remain at the top.

Bloody good game though. The third period was incredible. The Rangers only survived the Sens' final onslaught because they have a great goalie and their players have no concept of personal safety. They were using any available body part to block shots, of which there were many.

Now back to planning my strategy for extorting sponsorship money from my clients. My neighbour's daughter seems to be doing quite well at the Junior Pan-American games in Guatemala and has some new bling. She will move up in the cycling world and maybe go all the way. This costs lots of money that her parents don't have. My QC clients do.

I dont disagree in what you say but in todays terms what is still considered a sport?
Perhaps we should stick to watching darts and snooker etc.
Phil Taylor seems to pull the crowds in on a Thursday night all over the country. Seriously crowds of 5000 watching 8 players and televised whod have thunk it.

And the 2 New York Rangers goal scorers against the Ottawa Senators?
- Marc Staal (born in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada)
- Dan Girardi (born in Welland, Ontario, Canada)

Dan Prust (born in London, Ontario, Canada) had an assist.

Leaders in ice time for the NY Rangers in last night's game?
- Marc Staal (born in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada)
- Dan Girardi (born in Welland, Ontario, Canada)

NY Rangers points leader in the series against Ottawa?
- Brad Richards (born in Murray Harbour, PEI, Canada)

Whoever wins the Stanley Cup will have a sizable contingent of Canadian players.
