Canadian Music Scene

Re: Canadian Music Scene
On the ordinary radio I can get new country, Cancon or dinosaur rock.
On Sirius I get bluegrass, old country, the "London 1989" channel and Radio 1 (People may sneer at the idea of listening to Radio 1 but they likely haven't lived here).
On the ordinary radio I get relentless adverts and hard right polemic mingled with DJ patter (Z103.5 is especially bad for this) On Sirius there's no DJ.

Well then don't head to Ottawa where there is a station CHEZ FM that thinks people want to hear a steady diet of Supertramp/Max Webster/Zeppelin/Eagles/Steve Miller Band 24/7...classic rock is a really regressive format.....

Really, Sirius ? It's as dull and wank as the rest of the commercial radio papfest. Your call whether to listen to the commercial pap or find your own decent sounds.

Why not just direct your interweb browser to this audiosonic strangeness also available by iTunes radio or the many 1000's other channels on iTunes.

I think it's better than anything else available in my car. That said I mostly listen to the World Service or the trance channel.

At present I don't listen to much radio (or watch much live tv, for that matter) so I am hoping that, what with the internet and mail-ordering CDs, it shouldn't be too painful in that respect. That said, I have a real soft spot for BBC 5 Live radio on the rare occasions that I'm driving, so I'll rely very heavily on the 'listen again' function.
From what I recall, Canadian DJs are just too enthusiastic and slick for my taste The Christmas after I started uni I came home with my head full of terrible soft rawk classics that I'd somehow got a taste for when in Canada. It's when you find yourself singing along to Nickelback that you know you're in trouble

@Rich_007 - I can heartily recommend This gig in September if you can get over to Vancouver (I'm seriously considering coming for the weekend from Hamilton!). The Upstairs Recordings guys are very good, they've played at The Big Chill in the UK a few times now and are well worth your attention if you're into that whole Groove Salad thing.
So far this summer, I've been heartened to discover that some folk I rate over here do indeed come over to Canada for gigs. For example: we saw Fujiya & Miyagi and Thomas Dolby in the space of 10 days when we visited last September; David Byrne and Brian Eno are playing in TO in October.
It seems simmilar on the DJing front: I was chatting to Mr Scruff and Rob Luis (runs the Tru Thoughts label) at a festival earlier in the year and they both play in Canada every 4-5 months or so - and said the places they are booked to play seem to have a really good little scene going... I caught one of the Metro Area guys playing at a great night in Feb, more of a DJ bar than some cavernous hole of a club, with a good crowd who were friendly, knowledgeable and up for it.
After being given an initial impression that I'm moving to a cultural backwater, it's becoming apparent that there is enough to keep me occupied - it's just that you have to scratch the surface.
I'm really looking forward to getting up to Montreal for Mutek/Picnic Electronique, too... seems like it's north America's answer to the Sonar festival in Barcelona (and 10 years old next year).
