Default Canadian Child Benefit

So we are now eligible to claim for this - hurrah. Are we able to do this, even though I do not have a SIN number?

How come you don't have a SIN? Even if you're on TWP you should have one. It's OK if it's a 9-, for CCB after the qualifying period.

Because I don't work so they won't give me one!

Sure they will. Just ask. Assuming you're here legally.

You don't need to work to have a SIN, you need to have a SIN to work. What is your visa status here anyway?

They give SIN's to baby's, I'm pretty sure they don't work.

My Grandchildren all have their SIN, you have to have them in order to set up some bank accounts for RESP's or some such thing.

No reason you should be refused.

Go back. Find another lady. But David can apply for the child benefit in the meantime.

The lady is full of crap. You can have one Amy, my wife and daughter got one straight away, and then changed the 9 to a 1 with new number when we became residents.

From the Service Canada website.

Who can apply for a SIN

"If you are a Canadian citizen, a newcomer to Canada or a temporary resident, you need a Social Insurance Number (SIN) to work in Canada or to receive benefits and services from government programs." (My emphasis.)

Have you a work permit for yourself. I know when we came Hubby had the Temp Work Permit and as I knew I was not going to work, I was classed as a visitor accompianing him. So I could not have a SIN number.

See that is what they said to me. So now I am applying in his name - but as far as they are concerned the female is classed as being primarily responsible for the kids...so I will just have to add a note stating I am not allowed/do not have a WP and hope for the best.
