Canada post.
Couldn't find the old Canada post thread so thought i'd start up a new one.
Most recently they cocked up a priority delivery by delivering it 2 days late, and on the box where I ticked 'signature required', the mail delivery person actually crossed that out (you can still see my checkmark underneath his/her pen marks), and proceeded to shove a brand new passport in my community mailbox. I've been on hold for 25 minutes waiting to ream someone out over it. Pretty sure that counts as tampering with mail which IIRC is a federal offence. Sending the receipt back with Purolator didn't go well either, they dropped the unit number off the package and thus it didn't get delivered on time either. Guess ya can't win lol. |
Re: Canada post.
There are several offences that deal with mail (usually theft) under the Criminal Code Of Canada or the Canada Post Corporation Act.
Canada Post Corporation Act Opening mail 48 Every person commits an offence who, except where expressly authorized by or under this Act, the Customs Act or the Proceeds of Crime (Money Laundering) and Terrorist Financing Act, knowingly opens, keeps, secretes, delays or detains, or permits to be opened, kept, secreted, delayed or detained, any mail bag or mail or any receptacle or device authorized by the Corporation for the posting of mail.

Re: Canada post.
Problem is ....... how do you prove that it was the mailman who changed the designation for signature required??
It could have been anyone who handled that piece of mail. |

Both sides are still negotiating. They seem to still be talking and working with a mediator based on the last update a couple of days ago. I beleive the union would need to give 72 hours notice before a strike can start. If they have not reached a settlement by the time you want to send your citizenship application, I would send it Fedex to be safe. |

I tried to look for a price with Fedex and I couldn't work it out online. I know with Xpress post (including tracking and signature) it will be around $35 so I don't know if Fedex would be similar price or more expensive..? (never used a courier company before) |
Re: Canada post.
Here you go (I put in any old postcode for Vancouver - this is for a package so an envelope is likely to be even cheaper.. :)
https://www.fedex.com/ratefinder/sta...=getQuickQuote You could try this to get an idea of prices too: https://secureship.ca/ https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/british...4b36139102.jpg |

(never used a courier company before) No service is really any faster though, from BC to that far away, seems 3-7 days is the norm depending on what day of the week you send it, took Canada Post 6 days with Xpresspost, sent Wed October 3, and arrived on the 9th for my PR card renewal. Looking at the fedex website using my postal code in east Vancouver, rate is $41.89 using a Fedex envelope. 7 day trip, or $45 dollars for a 5 day trip. For the quote I chose Fedex envelope and 0.5 pound weight, for 1 pound weight the rate is $52.52. |
Re: Canada post.
Also check UPS ..... OH has used them as they have an office nearby, and they have seemed well priced.
and Purolator, while owned by Canada Post, will not be on strike. |

Appears citizenship application also goes to Sydney, NS, I would say around $40 using a Fedex envelope (free from fed ex drop off box or store) as that is what I was quoted for my PR card renewal, I ended up risking Canada Post as I had to go cheaper and Xpress post was $20 using my own envelope.

Re: Canada post.
Since this is a new thread, I think it fair to repeat what I've said on the original one.
No complaints about CanadaPost. The only time I have used a courier was a prepaid label for the return of a laptop. My PR application was sent registered but passport renewal docs were sent normal post. Everything expected arrives, Amazon deliveries via CanadaPost are received earlier than amazon says. Canada Post rings my bell or knocks on the door and waits for someone to answer before handing over a parcel. Courier companies, except for something heavy and large, will leave a parcel on the doorstep. Just the other day there was a knock, I went to the door, saw the parcel on the doorstep and the courier van was already driving off. Yay for CanadaPost  |
Re: Canada post.
Just keep in mind it can take up to a week for mail to reach Sydney, NS and that the union only needs to give 72 hours notice of a strike l.

Re: Canada post.
I send an Express Post envelope to BC each month and it usually takes 3 days. If I mail it on Monday it often gets there on Wednesday, and almost always before Friday.
In Russia mail delivery can be harsh: https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/british...9c473202f6.gif |
Re: Canada post.
Good grief people you are using a service that involves human beings and no system is perfect.
Stuff is sent everyday between points A to B and I suspect that in most cases arrive without any hiccups. So short of delivering the stuff you want sending or picking it up yourself you rely on these services. Even then after picking it up you could trip up and drop the box breaking the item  Canada Post are infamous for going on or threatening to go on strike much like the Royal mail and I dare say a few others. Yes it can be a PITA not knowing if your item could be delivered in time but thats life and strikes, walkouts are just not limited to mail services. If you think the extra $50 is worth it overnight to say end of 5 business days then go for it. Maybe Im lucky but for the past 30 odd years never had a birthday card go missing be it sent from the UK or Canada using Royal Mail or Canada Post. Also never had a parcel go missing using a variety of shippers. Until they find a way of securing email or online portals then certain stuff needs to be sent via mail/courier unless of course you are willing to sacrifice your personal details being hacked. |

Good business for glaziers though. First world problems. You get birthday cards? How quaint ;) you sound like your in a bit of a sarky mood today! Ive not had any issues with Canada Post (*finding something to touch nearby that is made of wood) and neither did I have issues with Royal Mail back in the UK. Recently I had an order from Amazon via Purolator and despite the fact they said they had rang the apartment intercom (they hadn’t), I was informed it would be sitting at their office on Pender Street after midday the next day. That’s fine, I don’t mind having to go and collect from a nearby location. the issue I had was before I could collect it. I received an update from them saying the package was at their depo in Richmond (by the airport). I rang them up to check and it was confirm it would be a Pender but still why send that update. For that reason if things go to sh*t this week with CP I won’t be using Purolator |
Re: Canada post.
We have been through postal strikes in Canada, several of them!!
In fact, we arrived at the Peace Arch border without any papers because Canada Post had been on strike for 6 weeks. CBSA officers were fantastic ............ looked at us, and the letter of employment that OH had, and said "Fine. Your papers should be at UBC, if they're not, just go to the Immigration Office in Vancouver, and you'll be fine" Only we weren't ........... Immigration Officer in downtown Vancouver said we had to go back to the border, re-enter the US, and then come back into Canada." hmmmmmmmmmm. Drove down to Peace Arch, stopped this side of the border, walked into the CBSA office ............ and another nice CBSA officer went into the back room and pulled out the envelope containing all our papers from the Out Box, waiting for that evening's pick-up by Canada Post  Since then, we've been through at least 5 actual strikes, and I don't know how many contract negotiations with the union having the right to call a strike in 72 hours.. This time, I really would not be surprised to see it actually happen. So, beckiwoo, I wouldn't trust anything important to the post until you see announcements that everything has been settled and ratified! |
Re: Canada post.
If only the government could I dunno use this new technology called the internet to submit applications, seems like it would streamline things a bit and maybe speed things up.

Until they find a way of securing email or online portals then certain stuff needs to be sent via mail/courier unless of course you are willing to sacrifice your personal details being hacked. A lot of info you send the Govt is classed as PROTECTED B information or the forms themselves once completed are classed as PROTECTED B so has to be sent via secure means. |
Re: Canada post.
Guess we better stop online tax returns then.
CRA manages to let me do just about everything online, file taxes, get copies of my past returns, etc. BC Govt lets people apply for social services online, submit monthly reports online all requiring personal info to be submitted. If other branches of govt can so why cant immigration folks? The info I send them for PR card renewal and other immigration related purposes is no more personal vs other private info supplied to govt departments by various online means. I would accept your point if other branches of government were not already letting people conduct bussiness online involving personal info so to me seems its quite possible to submit this info via a dedicated website of sorts. Oh forgot about EI its done online as well and they ask for quite a lot of personal info to apply for EI.

I have no idea how much it would cost to have all Departments receive personal information online. Sending via email means the sender and recipient need means of encrypting and decrypting files or information sent that contains PROTECTED B information. |

Is it easier to hack into government websites than to identify and make illegal use of (or sell) normal mail to and from government offices as a bent postal worker? |
Re: Canada post.
In the olden days we just handed over all our banking info via a form of check.
Check had lets see: Account number, address, phone number, bank branch info, account number, transit and branch number and we gladly provided signature on them as well. So much personal info freely handed over dozen or more times a month. Ive never had any issues with online banking but back in 1998 I did have a check stolen in the mail and the crook did what crook does to change the amount to something else. I had more banking troubles pre online banking vs now. Seems safer now. |

Re: Canada post.
We've had birthday cards and a 21st birthday present (small, but still .......) go missing from Canada to UK, and cards apparently go missing from UK to Canada. That's over 50 years.

I have had 3 parcels never arrive via CP and retailer had to re-ship.

I have a parcel coming tomorrow according to my email from UPS today. It says signature required and there's a box to click that says Sign Now. If I click it, a page comes up for me to sign in or register. I won't be registering but I'm curious about the 'sign now' thing. I assume that means a signature won't be needed tomorrow - in which case I'd be confirming receipt even if it's not delivered or some opportunist takes it if left on the doorstep and UPS are absolved of responsibility. Is that what it means or is it something else? |
Re: Canada post.
Hmmm. Never seen that option before. I assume its for the parcel can be letlft if nobody is home.
But thenif you sign now and its not delivered will they say oh it was delivered and signed for. Is there small print that says anything? |
Re: Canada post.
strike notice has been given. Looks like rotating strikes will begin Monday unless an agreement is reached.
