The second most popular destination for British expatriates. Discuss living in and moving to Canada.

Numbers don't tell the entire story.

There are many people in the US who think the US immigration system is badly broken. One of the reasons is that family-based immigration is two-thirds of total US immigration. This means bringing in people to re-unite them with their families even if these people don't have the skills that the US economy needs. In Canada, which has been held up by many in the US as the model to strive for, the situation is the exact opposite - i.e. two-thirds of total immigration is skills-based. Also skills-based immigrants tend to bring spouses and children who also make an impact.

In addition, Canada has about 10% of the US population so obviously will not need or be able to accept as many immigrants as the US. However, Canada is definitely smarter than the US regarding who it does accept. Many foreigners who graduate from US universities end up working in Canada for companies like Microsoft because they can't obtain permission to stay in the US after graduation. So I wouldn't agree that Canada is "losing the immigration competition" with the US.

Also when it comes to stats, it depends how recent the numbers you are looking at as they have changed over the last couple of years.

European destinations have become less popular for immigration mainly because of all the economic woes over the last couple of years. Also canada has made a number of changes to their immigration system which has helped.

If you look at general immigration (Not just brits) Germany and the UK are still right up there.

In my opinion France and Spain continue to be popular destinations for older british expats (55+), but Canada continues to be right up there when it comes to expats of working age.

It seems that among British Expats who have made the move, Canada has even been rated as number 1 in terms of satisfaction. Among british expats it has also been rated as number one when it comes to raising children.

As you know there are lies, damn lies and statistics, so I am sure that you can find one that places Canada as number two somewhere, so we should be careful in putting too much weight on them, as they are pretty meaningless.
