Canada, eh?

Hi All,

I'm actually from the Australia forums but I thought I would drop in here and say hello since my family and I migrated to Calgary Canada 3 years ago from the UK but are now moving to Melbourne Australia in February next year because we dont like it here. So, having gone through all the 'been there, done that, got the t-shrit' business and decided Canada is not for us, if anyone wants to pick my brains about this or needs info regarding the move to Canada please feel free to PM me or something :)

What don't you like about Calgary that you expect will be different in Melbourne?

There where many things we dont like here ranging from the weak politics to bad calgary drivers, weather and poor services (nobody seems to get things right here such as incorrect bank statements, utilities bills and things just simply not working). I could go on, but I must also say i know several other expats who moved here and love it. For us though just to many things, small and bad, made us say enough is enough.

Does Melbourne have beaches ? A beach would be nice I guess.

Not considered going somewhere else in Canada? The provinces all act like their own wee country so Ontario's a world away from Alberta which is a world away from Newfoundland. And perhaps try somewhere outside of the main cities?

Only if we were refused aussie visas would we have given that thought and then only if we could not move south of the border to the US.

I worked a bit in Melbourne Beach. I really liked the washed out, never was and never will be anything, ambience. Lots of Florida is like that.

Its a shame that you will be leaving Canada with a less than positive experience/memories as it isn't all like you mentioned. I haven't had any problems with utilities, etc and have only experienced a lot of friendly service and a very welcoming attitude.

Wishing you and yours all the best for your upcoming move! Good luck!!

Anywhere in particular in the US? I'm having trouble thinking of American places comparable to Melbourne.

I liked Pensacola. A bit. Not a lot. Highlight was that amazing bar which had been made from shipped Victorian-era pub/hotel parts mainly from Liverpool and the barman sliding us free double shots of bourbon after picking up our English accent and talking soccer and The Arse for an hour. Swamps, I can pass on. Never done much for me, swamps and gators. Real Florida's not like CSI Miami. More CSI Bubbaville, lost of rural poverty, illiteracy and illegitimacy, tim-roof shacks, and such.

Rich.

Thanks. Dont get me wrong, many expats I know love it here, we just found things a struggle. We will be leaving with fond memories of the magnificant landscape though, Banf, Jasper, Lake Louise etc.

I lived in Melbourne for two and a half years, and loved it. But your list of complaints about Calgary reads like a list of complaints about Melbourne. All the best with your move nonetheless. Melbourne is a great place if you take full advantage of the things it has to offer.

We figured that we could possibly find things not much different in Melbourne than in Calgary (though I am sure that Melbourne is more cultural than the cowboy western style of Calgary) but at least we have improved upon the weather !
