Canada/the Age Debate!

Ok here goes....

I have often sat and wonder what makes us all consider doing things at certain ages. there are many things we consider to be the Norm and many this we consider to be ridiculous age of concent.
I just want to throw a few things out there and see what happens.

How old are you and what would you change if you could? (always an interesting one) I am 37/38(21 to everyone else) Personaly i would never change a thing as life is one big lesson and i passed the university of life with flying colours!

Drivers ......
what age should we really be allowed on the road? maybe there should be a age to take drivers off the road?I feel this is one question i know will spark a debate.

smoking..... when,if ever should we be allowed to smoke? I smoke but i respect those that don't i think the laws should be stronger.

Having children....
what ages is right for you? (whilst you were young or older) I had my children at a young age. Although i would never change this i do often wonder what life would be like if i chose to wait a few more years(would i be here in Canada)

Considering the big move abroad?....... should there be an age for this? I just took the bull by the horns and went for it. You only live once. You are along time dead!

I am sure there are going to be many other question from all others here in the forum. Please feel free to add your questions. have fun! :D

I'm not going to answer all your questions, don't want to bore everyone

But the driving thing - You can start here at FOURTEEN  WAY too low I think. This is for a learner, but, can hold a full licence at 16. (if they pass the tests etc, too easy anyway).

I think they should be at least 16 before they can even get a learners.

I could be wrong but i thought it was a little older than that and that the laws are currently changing. I do agree though, there are far to many boy and girl racers on the road.

Yes you are wrong, I'm afraid - in Alberta, it's 14. My boys have just been through the process :)

Ok, i'm up for it!!

How old are you and what would you change if you could? (always an interesting one) I am 45, 46 on Friday yeeha! (but as i never got past 40 and go backwards i'm only 34!) dont think i would change anything or I wouldnt be where I am now (if that makes sense?!)

Drivers ......
what age should we really be allowed on the road? maybe there should be a age to take drivers off the road? minimum age should be 21, boys racers do tend to grow up eventuallY, oldies should be off the road when they cant go over 20 miles an hour (or given further lessons on how to PRESS the gas peddle and/or disengage handbrake) they can cause accidents by the actions of the impatient drivers stuck behind them

smoking..... when,if ever should we be allowed to smoke? I smoke but i respect those that don't I dont smoke in anyone elses home (or my own come to that) but i equally have a right to my 'habit' just as the noisy, smelly, often overindulgent alcohol drinkers. oooh thats gonna cause a row :scared:

Having children....
what ages is right for you? (whilst you were young or older) I desperatly wanted kids when i was younger, but after losing a baby and a couple near misses, I gave up the dream of having any. finally had a daughter at 32, soooo glad she came late in life, appreciate her more i think

Considering the big move abroad?....... should there be an age for this? heck no, just go for it, you know when the time is right

60+ and I would change nothing, if I did I may not have my grandchildren to occupy my time and keep me young.

Drivers ......
Hmmmm Passed my tests (car and bike) at 17 1/2 but I think after the 'L' plate there should by another stage for at least a year that holds the threat of "Do one thing wrong and that's it for you". Maybe a cool down period would settle teach us to control ourselves better.

smoking.....
I was a smoker form my teens to mid 20's (woke up one day with a hacking cough that lasted over a week so it wasn't so much giving up as starting again - so thanks for a second chance. As to an opinion then - NO I don't think smoking should be allowed in public, same as 'other' smokes really, if you want to do it then keep it private.

Having children.... Had mine eary - started at 21 - but it is very much whenever you are ready for it - and I am still young enough to have a great time with my grandkids.

Considering the big move abroad?.......
Again I started early - joined the Army (REME) at 18 (met the wife in Cyprus - WRAC) and we sort of got used to the gypsy life so thats why we finally finished up here in Canada.

:D

Hope that answers you questions.

How old are you and what would you change if you could? (always an interesting one) I'm 29. I always wish I'd bought a flat I looked at in 2000, it was 30k at the time and is worth 150k now!

Drivers ......
what age should we really be allowed on the road? maybe there should be a age to take drivers off the road? 20 I'd say. So many accidents are caused by teenage drivers

smoking..... when,if ever should we be allowed to smoke? I don't smoke, but I couldn't care less if others do, so long as it's not at work or in my home.

Having children....
what ages is right for you? (whilst you were young or older) I'm too selfish to have children.

Considering the big move abroad?....... should there be an age for this? As young as possible. It makes you appreciate what you have and what you've lost. It's certainly made me a better person. I will never take the beautiful countryside and history in the UK for granted again!

How old are you and what would you change if you could? (always an interesting one) [COLOR=Red]Mid twenties

It would be good if smoking didn't exist, but it does!

Having children....
what ages is right for you? (whilst you were young or older) [COLOR=Red] I don't know, probably early 30s is a good age as you're still relatively young but are more financially stable (hopefully!).

Considering the big move abroad?....... should there be an age for this? [COLOR=Red] I came over at 21, it seemed like a good idea at the time!!

How old are you and what would you change if you could? (always an interesting one) I am 25. The first 10 years of my life were spent in Canada, the remaining 15 have been spent in various parts of England

Drivers ......
what age should we really be allowed on the road? I passed my test at 17 1/2, and consider myself a careful, albeit nervous driver. I actually have gotten more nervous as time goes on. Personally I think it would be better if people were forced to take a driving test every 5 years or so, and if they failed they had to take "top up" lessons. Most of the idiots we see on the road here (Coventry/Birmingham) are in their 30's and 40's, and not the young kids or older people. I feel this is one question i know will spark a debate.

smoking..... when,if ever should we be allowed to smoke? [COLOR=Red]This is a tricky one for me. I'm asthmatic and allergic to smoke (if i'm around smoke for any length of time I can get quite sick), so obviously I distance myself from it whenever I can, but I can't do anything about people smoking around me in a public place (e.g. one of the worst places in queuing for a cash machine, with someone 6 inches behind you blowing smoke in your face). I put up with it, obviously everyone has a right to their own habits, but this one particularly bothers me. Almost as much as the fact that smoking "other stuff" has become so common place that every 5th smoker you pass smells a bit "different"...[COLOR]

Having children....
what ages is right for you? (whilst you were young or older) No children yet. We have certain criteria that must be met, i.e. we agreed that we had to both have stable jobs, own our own home that is big enough for kids, get married and have paid off all of our debts. Not quite there yet (working on the debts now)!

Considering the big move abroad?....... should there be an age for this? We're doing it (hpoefully) at 27 (for me) and 31 (my husband). We really want to make the move and be settled before we have kids. From personal experience of moving as a 10 year old, I could never do that to a child of "conscious" age, particularly since it wasn't so much of a choice or family discussion, we were told at Christmas and moved the first week in April! It's not that I lacked anything by moving, or that my education suffered or anything like that, but it was an extremely difficult adjustment, and not one I'd "force" on anyone. I'm relieved when I see people on this forum discussing the move with their kids before it happens!

I am sure there are going to be many other question from all others here in the forum. Please feel free to add your questions. have fun! :D

So...those are mine.

Hi there

I was just wondering! When you were in the Army did you ever spend time at Netheravon,Bullford,Salisbury area? My ex was in the Light Infantry and we spent some time there. I managed the NAAFI for a while. I also ran the corprals mess( no, i was not your typical Naffi staff member, i was a one man women).

Great answers to the debate!

Re: Canada/the Age Debate!

Hi BB
Nope I spent time in Arborfield (Reading Berks - training) then Cyprus, Germany, Anglesy, Cyprus, then back to Arborfield for demob - and I really enjoyed my time - but being in the REME you usually managed to duck, dive and 'dissapear' quite a bit.
Nowt wrong with NAFFI ladies as long as they dish up the tea and toast with a smile first thing after guard duty.
