Hello
Given that you are mental health trained you will need to do full 5 days assessment for children and mother care and general adults. You will need to do extra modules for children and then for mother and child care...basically midwifery...basic but still... the assessment cost me $2000 and I was told I need to do 80 supervised hours in practice to cover mother and child modules (like one of my scenarios was to deliver the baby! next part was to play the role of health visitor) so given that I am an adult nurse it is just too expensive and too much hassle...and this is all before I am allowed to sit the exam...

I'm glad I located this thread to see how difficult the process can be. I was looking to make the move in the next 10 months - 1 year and was nervy about applying too early!
All this information seems to run contrary to that view. I started the NNAS process today (hoping I've completed it all as accurately as I can), but then came to $650 payment which made me pause a little. That's one hell of a lot of money to shell out in one go. Payday beckons.
Also concerned by the difficulty people have had finding jobs once the red tape is out of the way as well as bad experiences when they do find work.
I'm excited about moving to Canada (thinking Vancouver, I'm mental health trained), but I just hope I can make it a positive career move! Judging by what people are saying so far it's a pretty frustrating journey.

It would appear there are lots of nurse vacancies online. I've been looking at http://jobbank.gc.ca and monster.ca
Whether or not their is much chance for being interviewed I'm not sure but I'm a firm believer that persistence pays off!

Are you allowed to work while you do all of this? Do they give you a temporary residency?

You are not allowed to work as a nurse until you have got your temporary registration or full on registration. Sometimes one can be granted temporary registration if the outcome of nursing assessments is straight forward and there are no extra modules to complete. In that case an individual is deemed ready for the entry exam and can apply for temporary registration. The exam needs to be then taken at the first available slot. Very rarely...more likely never is an UK educated nurse deemed ready for the exam as the programme differences are too great...ie they do basic midwifery and health visiting as a part of the course...which then requires about 80 hours of clinical practice on top of academic lectures... i just been to Canada in April and had the full assessment. I am an adult nurse and I was told I need to get practice hours for mother and child (midwifery) academic lectures for same plus few extra modules that I can do online from UK to do with legal issues around Canadian nursing. That is another $2500 practice hours need to be done in hospital in Canada.

What province is this if you don't mind me asking? A couple I have read have said there are no fees for assessments but fees for bridging courses? I am desperate to move my family out to Canada! How long ago did you train ?

I am happy to answer all your questions but if you could email me on my normal email address as it is driving me mad trying to access the forum from my phone <snip> I qualified in 2013 so was following the new curriculum which was apparently designed to more up to date with worldwide nursing...well it wasn't. I was looking at nova scotia however I did check alberta and British Colombia and yes initially it is all simple send us paper work for assessment but then once they got it it appears that due to programme difference further formal assessment is needed...and that where price tags are on the up. My husband and I we have three children and I can't take the risk of going over there without registration one income in our case would not be enough to have nice and safe lifestyle and I am not prepare to work in a nursing home as a hca as I did work damm hard to be where I am now (haematology)...but that's just me

Most provinces require the same clinical and theory hours these days and it certainly isn't easy. Most but not all provinces require some form of assessment before permission is granted to sit NCLEX and for many the assessment does require further courses.

Yes they do all seem about the same, some have said the assessment is free. Someone has told me Ontario are a lot stricter with entry requirements. I've also read BC is good. I'm going to work as a health visitor in the UK so I'm hoping this may build up on the child hours I need?

Also I've noticed its possible to apply as an RN AND LPN via NNAS?
Is this a possible route to get in and then do bridging whilst over in Canada?

I believe that's the case for any UK trained nurses as we specialise. I'm adult trained and will have to do the same but only child and maternity

I think BC are the only province who have RPN (Psychiatric nurses) - here is a thread with more info - there was a recent thread on here about Psych nursing in western provinces if you do a search on here - that thread should give you more information.

All IEN's (Internationally Trained Nurses) have to go through NNAS before submitting application to the provincial college of nurses whether RN or LPN. They basically review your transcripts and send a report to the college you have chosen but it is the college that makes the decision on whether you need to bridge or be assessed
