Calling all Coppers!

Please can anybody answer a question for my friends who are both police working in Greater Manchester...lucky them!!mmm
They were under the impression that they could not transfer to Canadian police easily but then came across British police going to Edmonton.
How easy/possible is it for them to become part of Canadian Police??

Loads going to Calgary, a few going to Edmonton - both forces, sorry, services (! :sneaky: ), are using the Provincial Nominee Programme. This is a potentially quicker way of getting to Canada should you be successful. Entry tests are pretty tough compared to UK. You would attend Canada to complete these, usually over a week to 10 days, at your own cost.

Best bet is to simply look on each of their websites to be honest, it's all there for the reading ....

http://www.gov.calgary.ab.ca/police/.../html/home.htm

www.police.edmonton.ab.ca

then also plough through www.cic.gc.ca.

You need good investigation skills :p:p

Sorry - just being sarcastic - feeling a bit mad today !

ZoeSW - what stage are you up to and any help and advice you have would be great.
Both my husband and I are currently in Merseyside Police and would love to go over together but are unsure of where to start:confused:

Hello,

I've sent all my qualification certificates off to IQAS in Edmonton to get them 'translated' into Candian ones. Edmonton requested that from me.
Until I get those back I can't send my application off (i think). It's safer to wait. Although I've got my medical and optician reports done.

If you go onto Edmontons Police site then you can print off the application form.

I haven't applied for a VISA because I'm hoping to go over on the PNP (provincial Nominee Programme). Apparently it's quicker to do it this way.

That's about it at the moment. I'm organising a trip to Edmonton in Dec to have a look around and get a feel for the place

Good Luck with it all, if you need anything else then PM me with your email and I will respond that way.

Regards

It really does depend on where they want to go. There are only a few forces, as mentioned that recruit international applicants.

I'm lucky, I'm a Canadian citizen, so I can go to any of them :)

Hi all,

I too am just about to go through the process of trying to get into the Edmonton Police. Now just waiting to hear back from IQAS...

ZoeSW...In the application what have you done for the CPR/First Aid form and how's it coming along in general?

For the people that are applying I am interested to know whether you are going solo or with others?!?!

Recently contacted the Toronto Met Police and they do not accept international transfers. You start from scratch like everyone else...of course your experience may get you a shoe in. The training costs $7000 out of your own pocket but there is a payment plan and you get paid while training.

Good luck.

Good luck.

Not to mention the cost to the OACP certificate which is $280 roughly and then the cost of CPR/First Aid. It all adds up!

Was thinking of applyin myself, but I am on the back burner for now. I just had surgery on my knee (July) and have been told by the physio that I have to wear a ACL brace on my knee for the next year and a half. Cant really see the Poilce letting me do the PREP next spring with a brace on:unsure:.
But I think the physio/Doctor airs on the side of caution, I had my other knee done in June 2004 in the Uk and was playing football without the brace the following summer and it felt fine.
Trouble is I am not getting any younger....:curse:

I find this totally bizarre - obviously completely different to the UK and some other Canadian forces. Why would you pay to put yourselves through this? :p
(OK, I know, I know - lots of people have to pay for their training for their dream career)

Something I would be interested in (if anyone is considering this route) is whether you come out with a recognisable or transferable 'qualification' at the end of it? It's a heck of a fee just for the pleasure of joining up. Police training has enough legal input to sink you, but you don't get bogged down with essays, etc. Can you come out the other end with 'half' a degree ?!

I know in the UK, the training is now geared towards regonisable qualifications, which you can take with you as and when and if you leave.

Correct. Lucky for me I'm a Canadian citizen, so I can go over and do the tests etc :)
