Calgary research trip - tips and advice.
 

Right :eek: I am being sent out to Calgary for a week to check out rentals, cars, cost of living, schools, etc we already have a job offer:thumbup:

Any tips on car hire, where to stay, having emigrated once this is purely sensible down to earth stuff, we know the tourist side of things quite well so dont want to bother with tours of lake louise etc:D The nitty gritty you might say.

Suggest you examine the wiki pages http://britishexpats.com/wiki/Calgary for info on which community might suit, and also which schools etc.

Rentals can be found in the local papers of course, but also check out on-line websites (given in wiki http://britishexpats.com/wiki/Renting-Canada) to see what's available :thumbup:

Thanks. We have a 5 yr old border collie which will make the rental situation interesting :unsure: Was planning to buy asap, but the massive plunge in the exchange rate has scuppered that idea!

We brought our collie with us, and managed to find rentals through Homerent.ca

The first was a temporary rental for 2 months, fully furnished, while the owner was away for the summer. The second was a huge unfurnished house in Hawkwood (NW).

It is always worth contacting the renters directly to see if you can negotiate to allow a pet (offer to pay an extra monthly levy etc, it'll still be cheaper than a kennel!), and also some may be willing to negotiate the length of the lease, even though the ad may say 1 yr.
