calgary - nova scotia
 

Has anyone made the move from calgary area over to nova scotia or vice versa. We came out to calgary about 2 years ago and now looking to make a move as not entirely settled. Any thoughts and opinions most welcome.

Not myself but a number of years ago a former co-worker accepted a transfer to Halifax because his position in Calgary was being eliminated.

His reasoning was, he could live very comfortably on his same salary and purchase a much, much nicer home out there.

He was back in Alberta (Edmonton) a little more than three years later. He couldn't handle the winters in Nova Scotia, way more snow, rain and fog than he was used to.

One of the companies I worked for a had a Halifax branch office - got shut down once or twice a year due to severe storms :blink:

thanks for replys. as to why - not sure. All i do know is we are disappointed with how far, or not, our money went on a house in calgary - tiny garden, etc just not what we had hoped for. We just feel like we are treading water and whereas we don't think a move back to the uk would be the right one for the children we just feel this just now is not the place in canada for us. We are exploring various options but one at a time......

Halifax has way more character than Calgary and generally ranks higher than Calgary in most quality of life categories. You won't get ripped off nearly as bad when it comes to buying a home either. Halifax is warmer, especially in fall.

If its just the size of the house/garden thats of concern I would say look outside the city.

As long as they don't suffer from fear of excessive flatness of terrain and don't mind living somewhere even smaller with less amenities.

I know people who live in Airdrie & Okotoks who think they're great ... maybe you don't have to move as far as Halifax?

again thanks for all the input - keep it coming. We actually live in Cochrane - so outside of calgary already. I guess we both miss the ocean coming from seaside towns.

Kinda dry here if you grew up anywhere near water ... but that's what BC vacations are for :thumbsup:

If you miss the sea then unless you move to be near it, you will never be happy! My OH was the same, always lived near the sea and living near a lake in BC just didn't cut it. We are now 5 mins away from the sea and happily settled in NS and love it.

People will offer you lots of opinions but only you know what will make you truly happy. :thumbsup:

We've been in Halifax almost 4 years now and most of the friends we've met from overseas have moved elsewhere in Canada during that time.
Housing is cheaper if you can live in other parts of NS, but the closer to Halifax you get, the more expensive it is, smaller gardens, higher taxes. The area we live in also has lots of restrictive clauses, can't put up a fence, hang out washing etc.
One thing that has frustrated us here is how much of the ocean is inaccessable. A lot of the land has deeded access, so there are only a number of beaches you can use, and of course, they are popular so get very busy.
As to NS being warmer than Calgary in Autumn, well at the moment it is really cold here and we had frost warnings again last night. We've had a summer of rain and fog, which followed a really long, cold winter.
I think generally food and fuel are also more expensive in NS, compared to other areas in Canada.
