Great! You will be here just in time to hear how much the provincial government deficit is (about $6 billion is being bandied about), due to the low price of Canadian oilsands crude. This will, most likely, lead to job losses in oil companies -- some have already occurred -- and, by extension, in industries that rely on the oil and gas industry for their earnings. Add to that, the layoffs of provincial government employees, and maybe the UK won't seem like such a bad place, after all!

Have you ever considered doing some voluntary work for the Samaritans?

I bet you don't get many return calls but rope sales would soar

harsh but funny

think the longest the actual rigs have been down have been around 7 months, so if the op is planning on September (good choice imo) then things should have picked up by then. Emphasis on the should!

Good on you salmonfella. I had a sudden flashback to January 1978. A 24 year old Linotype Operator/Compositor landing in Calgary, taking a Greyhound bus to Red Deer for a $6.50 ph job. If I had the money, I would have hopped on plane back the next morning. But you soldier on. I ended up getting a $10 ph job in Edmonton in May of 1978. Cast my last hot metal lead slug in 1980 and joined the computer revolution.

Hi

My wife and I fly to Calgary 13 April (for good). We will book a week's hotel and hire car and buy a car and rent an apartment during this week. Also open bank accounts, get driving licences, register for healthcare, get social security numbers etc. Eventually we will get round to looking for jobs. Complete our house sale here 1st March and I sit an exam (Canadian banking) in London 30 March so plenty going on. I am 39 and she is 32 so a little older but got to go through the same.....

Good luck

Yep, I'm heading out on 1st March, also solo. However I have a step brother who I will be staying with until I can scrape a few pennies together and find my own place. Like you have a few contacts, but just gotta see how things pan out when I get there.

Booked a return flight on the 17th April just incase its a big failure!

I'm arriving in Calgary with my wife and kids in May (we're in our late 30's), we will rent a vacation rental or similar for a couple of weeks, then find a 'permanent' rental for 1 year while we get a feel for the place. Then we plan to buy a house.

Exciting times!
